Sorcerer

A Sorcerer (魔道師, Madoushi) is a humanoid being with the ability to manipulate Magic much like their female counterparts, the Witch.[1]

OverviewEdit

CharacteristicsEdit

Much like witches, their appearance is just like that of a human's.[2] Whilst Witches are all female, Sorcerers seem to all be male practitioners of Magic. Sorcerers also shares the same system in which they utilize mantras. However, it seems that just like the witches, not all individuals require chanting.[3][4]

View on SorcerersEdit

Among Witches, the view on Sorcerers shows some level of reverence in their magic prowess, as observed when Eruka Frog's incantation on performing Magic Calculation pay respect to Rerené Descartes[5] and when Death himself assumes that Witches themselves are familiar with extremely powerful Sorcerer items such as the Book of Eibon.[6] Non-Witches hold a far more skeptical view on Sorcerers, indicated when Death the Kid considered Eibon to be just another "villainous scum" just from being introduced to a Demon Tool he created.[7]

Types of SorcerersEdit

Various races and titles exist for Sorcerers:

  • Great Old One (旧支配者, Guratto Orrudo Wan): Among Sorcerers, a Great Old One is capable of being born from them and can embody an entire type of Madness. However, the exact method and process of being designated a "Great Old One" is unknown and has only happened to Eibon, who embodied the Madness of Knowledge.[8]
  • Icon (偶像, Gūzō): Artificial, human-like Sorcerers created from the Book of Eibon that personify one of the chapters within the book (in which said chapters are named after the Seven Deadly Sins). Noah (Greed) is an example of Icons.[9]
  • Great Sorcerer (大魔道師, Dai Madōshi; FUNimation "Great Wizard"): A grand title for a sorcerer used by those renown in their craft. Eibon is the only, known Great Sorcerer.[10]

Special AbilitiesEdit

Although many Sorcerers can display a variety of different abilities depending on their animal theme (or lack thereof) and making, Sorcerers tend to have common abilities such as:

Episode 47 - Eibon tells Death to save the world

A Sorcerer performing Magic.

  • Magic (魔法, Mahō): Sorcerers are known to be powerful manipulator of the nearly limitless energy known as Magic, much like their counterpart the female Witch.[1] This, coupled with their immense knowledge of magic, means that they can create things such as Demon Tools,[1] Demon Books, and can create even artificial life in the form of Demon Tool Soldiers.[11]
  • Longevity: Also much like their female counterparts, Sorcerers can live far longer then humans, being capable of living up to centuries old as far as eight hundred years.[12]

EquipmentEdit

  • Demon Book (魔法書, Mahō-sho): Although not necessarily a requirement to perform magic, many Sorcerers introduced (i.e Eibon and Grimoire) have all commonly utilized Demon Books as standard equipment.[13]
