The power of the Kishin goes beyond human understanding. It is evolution itself! Shinigami and you at DWMA have watched over and protected the world by acting as a deterrent to that power. DWMA's intent can be summed up in one expression: "Maintain the status quo." But time moves forward. Isn't it logical that we grow and advance along with it? It's only natural. Doctor Stein...do you really want a monotonous world...where nothing ever changes?

—Medusa to Stein, Chapter 15

Medusa Gorgon (メデューサ・ゴーゴン, Medyūsa Gōgon), simply known as Dr. Medusa while in the academy, was a witch, the middle of the three Gorgon Sisters, and the mother of the demon sword master, Crona.[13] Formerly a nurse in the DWMA,[14] she secretly plotted to release the Kishin from his sealing and succeeded with the assistance of her group of assossiates.[15]

Cultural References[]

Medusa Gorgon is an allusion to the Medusa associated with Greek Mythology. Medusa was once a golden-haired, fair maiden, who, as a priestess of Athena, was devoted to a life of celibacy; however, after being pursued by Poseidon and being forcefully taken by him, Medusa pleaded with her patron goddess for protection but Athena saw this as a sin. For this offense, she was punished by the goddess in a most terrible manner. Each wavy lock of the beautiful hair that had charmed her molester was changed into a venomous snake; her once gentle, love-inspiring eyes turned into blood-shot, furious orbs, which excited fear and disgust in the mind of the onlooker; whilst her former roseate hue and milk-white skin assumed a loathsome greenish tinge.[16]

Personality[]

When acting as DWMA's nurse, Medusa presents herself as a caring and supportive member of the staff, even to the point of comforting Maka Albarn when she displayed her insecurities as a meister[17] and showing "concern" for other students within the academy such as Soul Eater.[18] She was known throughout the academy for being a kind faculty member who not only treated students but also counseled them.[7]

However, as Franken Stein pointed out, Medusa herself is "full of lies" and in actuality cares little for anyone but seemingly herself.[19] Being a scientist, she also tends to views things like a researcher to the point of using actual individuals such as her own child, for experiments.[20] In addition, she can be viewed as irredeemable, willing to manipulate anyone for her goals and even abandon her own child after deeming them a "failure".[21] Perhaps Medusa's greatest strengths, however, are her cunning and intellect. Often enough, she forms complex plans that even the DWMA at times fails to counter[22] and tends to learn from her own mistakes.[23] She even feels blasphemy is part of the nature of being a Witch.[24]

However, despite these dark and manipulative traits, even Medusa can possess some love, admitting to Dr. Stein that she does have genuine feelings for him and with Arachne even confirming this notion.[25] However, as Stein even pointed out, she most likely has an inability to truly understand the concept of love.[26] When subjected to Tezca Tlipoca's Reflect (despite not even being the intended target), it also is revealed that even Medusa herself, to some unknown degree, is aware of her treatment to Crona and even harbors some amount of guilt.[27] Medusa herself isn't infallible to even being subject to other emotions such as nervousness to the point of actually fidgeting, seen when she was going to meet Death face-to-face for the first time.[28]

Oddly enough, despite her own horrendous actions and rather odd tendencies (going barefoot and the way she expresses love) she find the antics of the DWMA upper brass utterly absurd, and impossible to manage. This is demonstrated during her time in Rachel's body when she got fed up with Death and Spirit, and later during her fight with Justin Law and Tezca Tlipoca.

Appearance[]

While she wears various outfits over the course of the series, the most notable and common of these is a black body-length suit with hood, which extends downwards to her knees. The hood itself is adorned with an eye-like marking upon either side which, interestingly, when worn in addition to the shape of her hair, gives it the appearance of a snake's mouth, with teeth and fangs. It is notable that she is barefoot when not in disguise with unique toenail and fingernail polish that is black featuring yellow arrows pointing upwards.[29]

After the revival of the Kishin Asura and her defeat by Stein and Spirit, she was forced to take possession of a young child's body. This gave her the same build and frame of the child, while still retaining the majority of her original form's appearance. However, the body did have some practicalities, as she found it particularly useful in deceiving many people. Medusa still attires herself with the usual hoodie but this one has two snake-like extensions that are attached at the neck. Also, like her adult form, she prefers to be barefooted. There is also an apparent white snake head motif on its front. Also, rather than a bodysuit, Medusa sports a knee-length dress, and, unlike her adult form, does not wear nail polish. There is also the absence of the snake tattoos on her arms.[30]

Seeing the opportunity after Arachne's defeat by Maka during the capture of Baba Yaga's Castle, Medusa leaves her previous victim and transfers herself to the empty shell of Arachne's body. This current possession shifts Medusa's appearance much closer to her original form but now bearing Arachne's black hair color arranged in Medusa's typical style. She chooses to also adopt her typical long hoodie preceding the transformation, with it now featuring an indistinct spider's web patterning surrounding the neck line. Medusa also has a nick on her left eyebrow originally. However, the nick vanishes when she possesses Rachel and Arachne.[31]

Her soul also takes a snake-like theme, closely resembling the head of the Gorgon of Greek legend, Medusa. However, instead of snakes, it has the same vector arrows that are present within Medusa's spells. The soul features a purple color in addition.[29]

Manga
Soul Eater Chapter 5 - Medusa appears

Medusa's soul

Medusa's power is considerable enough for Franken Stein to note that she possessed an enormous soul[32] and for Eruka Frog to claim that there weren't any other witches more powerful than Medusa.[33] Medusa was able to fight on-par with Franken Stein, whom Spirit claimed was the strongest meister in Death Weapon Meister Academy, and held the upper-hand.[34] She also held her own against Justin Law after his Madness Fusion, although circumstances required her to utilize the Purple Clown and to use Madness Fusion herself on her Light Serpent in order to be capable of damaging the foe.[35]

Medusa was confident that she was able to defeat Tezca Tlipoca and Enrique in the "blink of an eye".[36] Though great in power, she is far less powerful than the likes of Death and was visibly nervous in meeting him in person, a stark comparison to her usual cool demeanor as noted by Spirit himself.[37]

Statements by guidebooks

Medusa Gorgon is considered a Powerful Witch.[38]

Both Medusa and Stein's souls are the same size, making them equal though Medusa has an edge in defense.[38]

Special Abilities[]

Nake Snake Cobra Cobra.

—Medusa's magic chant, Chapter 5 (Yen Press)

Magic (魔法, Mahō): As a witch, Medusa is capable of performing various kinds of magics.[14] Her magical power can be boosted when in proximity of a powerful madness wavelength.[39] Using the 1,000 snakes in her body, she can use them by implanting them inside another's body, allowing her to track, watch, and communicate from a snake within an individual.[40] It can also increase aggression, and those affected by her magic will have a snake around their soul.[14]

Chapter 21 - Medusa attack Stein with magic

Medusa' direct attack spells used against Stein.

  • Direct Attack Spells (直接攻撃魔法, Chokusetsu Kōgeki Mahō): Medusa's signature magic skill, this allows her to control of the 1,000 "snakes" within her body, which take the appearance of angular vectors, which she claims will allow no "prey" coming close to ever get away. These arrows also have various, unique functions such as being able to bend, ricochet, and pierce targets, while also taking on properties of sharp blades when slashing and cutting.[41]
  • High-Level Spells (上級魔法, Jōkyū Mahō): Medusa is capable of performing select advanced magics such as soul protect.[14]
  • Demonic Energy (特殊な魔力, Tokushuna Maryoku): Medusa is capable of infusing her Snakes with this kind of energy. According to her, a tiny amount of her kind of Demonic Energy was designed to accelerate the madness within a person and it's effects are activated during Soul Resonance.[42]

Wavelength Control (波長コントロール, Hachō Kontorōru): With her magical power, Medusa is capable of splitting her own soul into tiny pieces only under special circumstances in which her magical power is boosted by the proximity of a powerful madness wavelength.[39]

Chapter 21 - Medusa kicks Stein

Medusa attacks Stein.

High Physical Abilities (高い身体能力, Takai karada nōryoku): Medusa possess great physical abilities that enable her to battle the likes of Franken Stein, withstand several blows of his soul menace technique, and be agile enough to dodge attacks from a scythe.[43]

Hand-to-Hand Combat (体術(たいじゆつ), Taijutsu): Medusa is a very formidable and capable unarmed combatant. Her fighting style is a defensive one consisting of the usage of magic, kicks, skills in blocking, and her tail snake. Her defenses are considerable to the point she usually leaves no openings. Her combat prowess is enough to fend off and place considerable injury on Franken Stein when wielding Spirit.[15] She is also able to hold her own with Justin Law[44] and defend herself of assaults from Enrique, a monkey and skilled in thai boxing.[36]

Genius-level intelligence: Medusa is very intelligent and is considered a scientific genius in her own right. She had successfully figured out the DWMA's secret [45] from her time as a nurse and invented the Black Blood, which can turn one into a Kishin via resonating with them from the madness.[46] Medusa is also very skilled in manipulating and deceiving others. She is capable of bending almost anyone to her will through methods varying from false kindness to blackmail and even torture. The best proof of her acting and manipulation skills is the fact that she managed to live unnoticed in the DWMA, under the nose of even Death himself[47] and hiding her experiments in numerous laboratories. These experiments are part of her quest to harness Madness, whether through the creation of tools or empowering individual persons such as Crona. Her experiments include the Black Clown, the Black Blood, and the Portable Purple Clown, all threats to the DWMA.[44]

  • Medical Expertise: As the former nurse of the Death Weapon Meister Academy, Medusa has extensive knowledge of medicine.[48] She has been able to use this knowledge to created substances that expedites the effects of the Black Blood within its carriers, while disguising this substance as herbal medicine, both in its pill form and its effects on regular blood.[49]

Serpent Commanding: According to Medusa, her Light Serpents, while themselves "incredibly simple magic lifeforms," are not themselves a magic attack, as they respond not to her magic but automatically to her simple commands, without her having to release Soul Protect and hence without her needing to use additional magic.[50]

Culinary skill: Medusa cooks on occasion,[51] even preparing a bunny for dinner—that she made Crona kill.[52]

Weaknesses[]

Chapter 69 - Medusa's Vectors bounding off Justin

Medusa's Vector render useless due to Justin Law/Clown's Madness Wavelength.

As a Witch, an evil Magic User, Medusa Gorgon is thus vulnerable to those who possess an Anti-Demon Wavelength or one of the Great Traditional Techniques of the Scythe-Meister. In addition, although Medusa has an extremely strong defense, Franken Stein explained that her own pride could potentially cause her to let down her guard long enough for a skilled fighter to exploit her opening.[53]

Soul Eater Chapter 58 - Arachne traps Medusa

Arachne's Madness Attack dispatches Medusa

Medusa knows her own limits of power, showing genuine nervousness when meeting Death face to face for the first time.[54] Medusa was also utterly crushed by Arachne Gorgon's mind attack, showing how Madness-related attacks can incapacitate her quickly[55] and prompting her to create the Portable Purple Clown as an external contingency against Madness.[44] Medusa's own Magic was also disrupted then rendered useless against Justin Law's Madness Fusion, with Justin calling her magic attack as being from an "obsolete age".[44] She was also susceptible to even just the residual of Tezca Tlipoca's Reflect ability, causing her to confront her guilt regarding her actions towards Crona, even though Tezca was not targeting her.[44]

List of techniques[]

Calculation Spells techniques
  • Calculation Spells: Magic Calculation (演算魔法:マジックカリキュレーション, Enzan Mahō: Majikku Karikureshon): Medusa is skilled in the employment of Calculation Spells to determine placements, using this magic along with Eruka to help set up an Independent Cube created by Free due to the precision required within the spell.[56]
Direct Attack Spells techniques
Chapter 16 - Vector Arrow x3

Vector Arrow x3.

  • Vector Arrow (ベクトルアロー, Bekutoru Arō): Medusa summons arrows that, like snakes, move rapidly towards her target. Vectors seem to assume almost tangible qualities, able to cut and pierce opponents like blades. Medusa also can manipulate these arrows to alter their direction and size, making them extremely versatile for direct offensive attacks or to redirect opponents' movements.[14]
    • Vector Arrow x3 (ベクトルアローx3(バイスリー), Bekutoru Arō Bai Surī): Noted by Franken Stein to be the more powerful variant of Vector Arrow, this triples the amount of arrows present.[56]
  • Analyze Decompose (解析分解, Kaiseki Bunka): A spell that allows Medusa to shoot her target with her Vector Arrows and use it's Magic to break down any coating from the target.[57]
  • Vector Storm (ベクトルストーム, Bekutoru Sutōmu): Medusa surrounds herself with numerous intertwining Vector Arrows, projecting upwards from the ground and resulting in a spinning physical shield, capable of shielding her from attacks.[56]
Other Magic techniques
Chapter 58 - Medusa using Compress Vectors

Compress Vectors.

  • Vector Plate (ベクトルプレート, Bekutoru Purēto): Medusa is able to summon a plate that is able to propel the subject the direction in which the vector she created points in, including herself even. She can also perform this spell in midair and use it for high speed movement.[58]
  • Compress Vectors (ベクトル圧縮, Bekutoru Asshuku): This spell surrounds the subject, compressing them into a space the size of a small ball.[55]
  • Tail Snake (テイルスネーク, Teiru Sunēku): A vector protrudes from Medusa's backside like a tail. Pliable but strong, the Vector stretches while still keeping her entire weight balanced so she can dodge with significant flexibility, even supporting her weight while holding her upside down.[59]
Chapter 48 - Vector Conduct

Vector Conduct.

  • Vector Conduct (ベクトルコンダクト, Bekutoru Condacuto): By placing this spell onto a person, Medusa gives them the vision to follow invisible Vectors she has laid in locations. This spell can be used to secretly guide others to intended destinations.[60]
  • Vector Boost (ベクトルブースト, Bekutoru Būsuto ): Magic which Medusa can bestow to others, showing as an arrow on their self. This doubles their power on their next attack exerted in the direction which the arrow points.[61]
High-Level Spells
  • Soul Protect (ソウルプロテクト, Souru Purotekuto): An advanced magic which allows Medusa to disguise her soul as a ordinary human, being able to fool the soul perception techniques used by both human meisters and even Reapers. During the duration of this spell's active use, she cannot perform magic.[4]
  • Soul Protect: Cancel (魂の保護:解除, Tamashī no Hogo :Kaijo; FUNimation "Soul Protect: Release"): This magic deactivates the effects of Soul Protect.[4]
Wavelength Control techniques
Medusa Possessing Rachel

Medusa using her variant of soul possession.

  • Soul Possession (魂憑依, Tamashī Hyōi): Under special circumstances of having her magic boosted, Medusa can split and scatter her own soul into tiny pieces to later be implanted.[39] She can occupy another animal or person[62] in order to gather magical power.[37] It is far easier, however, for Medusa to possess the body of someone related to her such as her sister, Arachne Gorgon (though she abandoned most of her body and consciousness to become madness itself).[36]
Madness techniques
  • Madness Fusion (狂気融合, Kyōki Yūgō): With the usage of her Portable Purple Clown, Medusa can utilize this ability in an effort to combine the power of the Purple Clown and her Light Serpents to use in her attacks. This enabled her Light Serpents to fare better during her fight with Justin Law, whose Madness Fusion with the Clown allowed him to attune to Asura's Madness Wavelength, rendering her Snake Magic useless.[44]

Equipment[]

Light Serpent (ライトサーペント, Raito Sāpento): Functioning as support and within her snake tattoos, her Light Serpent is a Magic Lifeform which can act on simple commands from her hands, even outside her own Magic or in situations such as the limitations of Soul Protect.[63]

Portable Purple Clown (紫染の道化師, Shisen no Dokeshi): Medusa created this artificial clown in an effort to externally combat the usage of Madness against her. While not as strong as an actual clown, it was particularly effective against Justin Law's madness illusions. The Purple Clown can be utilized for Madness Fusion to combine with Medusa's own magic attacks and hence to overcome her Magic's weaknesses against Madness.[44]

Snake Listening Device (ヘビの盗聴器, Hebi no tōchōki): Medusa can use her Magic with Demonic Energy to create a listening device which, when ingested, can hone in and allow her to listen to others' conversations. It can also allow her to speed up one's onset of Madness due to the Demonic Energy within it.[42]

History[]

Over 800 years ago, Medusa was born as the middle child of the Gorgon Sisters. She was active during the 1200s.[64] Medusa aided her sister, Arachne, when her actions of creating the demon weapon from Eibon's instruction earned her being branded a heretic and caused her to be chased by the infamous Reaper himself, Death. However, Medusa betrayed her sister and left her to fight Death alone. As a result, Arachne was nearly killed by Death.[64]

Eventually, Medusa resurfaced in the current era. She had created a substance known as the Black Blood and also had a child, who she named Crona, from an unknown man.[65] She then found the demon weapon, Ragnarok and had him melted down in a vat full of Black Blood. Medusa replaced all of Crona's blood with the Black Blood and the mixture containing what was left of Ragnarok.[66]

With Crona, Medusa raised her child to be a killer. One of the lessons they were taught was killing. Faced with a child who was conscious of other life and therefore couldn't "deal" with it, she would lock her own child in a dark room for days on end with Ragnarok under the presumption of them being "punished" for not following her instruction. She constantly pressured Crona into killing the Little Bunny, and resorted to the same punishment when Crona remarked they couldn't "deal with it". Finally after a few days, Crona's sanity broke and they did as she instructed, killing the Little Bunny. Medusa then remarked that they would have bunny for dinner that night.[67] However, despite Medusa's intentions of making Crona an independent individual, they became the opposite; they became completely dependent on her own orders. Thus, she labelled them a failure in that regard.[68]

With permission under Queen Maba of the Witch Order of under the presumption of research on the school itself, Medusa infiltrates Death Weapon Meister Academy with soul protect under the guise of the school doctor in the DWMA Faculty staff.[69] However, her true goal was to find the location of the first Kishin and use the black blood to resurrect him.[70]

Episode 7 - Medusa sends a Snake to Crona

Medusa sends a Snake to its intended target: Crona.

Being in Florence, Medusa sends out Crona to eat the souls of the Humans within the Santa Mario Novella Basilica. She proclaims that they will be a Kishin. When Crona denounces the notion, she uses her Magic to give them confidence. She then listens and watches from afar as Crona kills all the individuals within the church.[73]

Later, as she watches Crona's battle with Maka Albarn, she questions the Meister on their apparent slowness and when Crona asks how to deal with girls, Medusa tells them they should simply kill them.[74] When Crona prepares to finish Maka and Soul off, she urges them to do so.[75] Medusa is then surprised to find the DWMA's strongest Meister and Death Scythe arriving. She wonders how Crona will perform against them.[76]

Episode 8 - Medusa talks to Stein and Spirit

Medusa talks to Stein and Spirit as she retrieves Crona.

Once Crona and Ragnarok reach their limit and have a rejection response, Medusa then cancels her Soul Protect and reveals herself. Criticizing Crona for their apparent sloppiness and revealing that she will punish them, she seemingly intends to do harm on both Stein and Spirit, attacking them with her Vector Arrow spell. When her spell is countered with Stein's Witch-Hunt, she takes the opportunity to retrieve Crona with her Light Serpent, but not before complimenting their Soul Resonance attack. She then escapes with Crona on hand.[77]

She later reappears in her nurse guise, requesting Maka assist her in getting a love-struck Spirit off of her leg, causing the latter to be Maka Chopped. Hearing Maka blame herself for what happened to Soul, Medusa "reassures" the young Meister that she'll get stronger.[78]

After Soul has one of his nightmares and he screams out, both Maka — and, moments later, Medusa — arrive. When Soul reassures them that he only had a bad dream, she told both members of the Meister/Weapon pair to call her right away should anything happen. She muses in her head that some of Ragnarok's Black Blood mixed into Soul's own, now finding him an interesting research subject.[79]

Uncanny Sword arc[]

At some point in time, Medusa snuck her way into Maba's room to steal the key to the cell door of the Man with the Demon Eye and unbeknownst to her, was witnessed by Eruka Frog.[80]

Medusa silences Eruka and Mizune.

Attending a Witch Mass on the subject of Medusa Gorgon's activities in the DWMA, Medusa herself appears and is granted permission by Maba to continue her research. As the mass ends and she leaves with Crona and Ragnarok, she is stopped by the likes of Eruka Frog and a member of the Mizune family and questions on her intents and purposes as well as inform Medusa they're aware of her sneaking into Maba's room. Medusa quickly shuts them up, secretly implanting a Light Serpent and some of her Snakes into both of them before leaving, chiming in the fact the school nurse can't be late.[81]

Later, Medusa is caring for Soul Eater, who recounts his dream experiences and shares them with the nurse as he talks about the Black Room as well as the Little Ogre present. Medusa is surprised, noting the Black Blood having an actual effect but actually tells Soul there's nothing to worry about and that having the same dream often is common. She also notes that his recovery is coming along fine.[82] Just after her examination, Maka interrupts both Medusa and Soul but quickly flees at the sight of Soul's scar. Medusa deduces that the scar is what is causing the awkwardness.[83]

Soul Eater Episode 12 HD - Medusa prepares to kill Eruka

Medusa prepares to kill Eruka.

As she walks down a alleyway in Death City, feeling the infiltration of DWMA is worth her efforts and desiring to test Soul's capabilities, she runs into Eruka and Mizune once more. The frog Witch proclaims they're here to kill her. Although she advises that even with Soul Protect, young Meisters can recognize a Witch by appearance, Eruka retorts her "concern" with the fact both of them employ Transformation Magic and can use that to escape, a capability Medusa herself notably doesn't possess and plan to use the Soul Protect limitations to their advantage and should she drop it, she'd be outed as a Witch. Cancelling their own Soul Protect, they prepare to kill Medusa. However, having anticipated their eventual altercation, she has one of her Light Serpents she implanted inside them earlier kill Mizune while explaining to Eruka they're Magic Lifeforms and are automatic. Preparing to kill Eruka, she is interrupted by Stein and Maka's speedy reaction, with Eruka escaping. Faking the fact she "sensed" two Witches along with Stein and Maka, she supports the claim from Maka insinuating the "Witch" who "hurt" Soul was present, although Stein quickly rebuffs that notion much to her dismay, but expresses gratitude the school nurse wasn't hurt.[84]

Tracking down Eruka with one of her Snakes sending a signal of her location to Medusa, she tasks the Witch with the releasing of the "Man with the Demon Eye", the man who plucked out Queen Maba's eye out despite the consequences with Medusa threatening her life all the while her feet grovels Eruka in her frog form. With Eruka relunctantly accepting and transforming back as she labels her intentions carefully, Medusa comically orders her to turn back into a frog, remarking her grovelling in her human form doesn't feel as good as her frog form.[85]

When questioned, she claimed he insisted on talking about it. Maka then leaves angrily, with Medusa being amused by her irritation. She then looks for the files on Maka, only to be surprised by their absence. Stein intervenes, questioning Medusa's "worry" about Soul and Maka. The witch states that a lot had happened to them recently, while cursing at him internally. When Stein questions Medusa on Maka's prescription, she claims it is a personal herbal medicine that improves circulation and pulse, which it is in a way. This is while contemplating killing him and wondering how much he knows. Medusa says that she is crazy about herbs and couldn't just do nothing for Maka and Soul. When he insinuates she's a witch, she has a moment of killing intent but instead claims calling her such could be seen as harassment based on her appearance.[91]

Though Medusa buffs accusations with claims he's drunk, he reveals he wasn't to begin with and further deduces she is interested in the Kishin under the DWMA. Angered, she expresses intent to kill him if Death wasn't in the same room. She confirms his conclusions, claiming the Kishin's power is evolution itself and the DWMA hinders it and "maintains the status quo", with her intentions to undo the DWMA's effort. She then tries swaying Stein to come to her side, nearly kissing him. However, Sid interrupts and Medusa makes uses of the diversion, assisting Free with creating a Independent Cube with the Magic Calculation spell along with Eruka. Expressing the group having little idle time, Crona appears with the Mizune Family, trusting them to destroy Death City as her group then moves to resurrect the Kishin underground.[95]

A Fight to the Death at the Big Bash arc[]

Medusa - Vector Arrow

Medusa preparing to use Vector Arrow x3.

After Stein explains Medusa's strategy, she emerges from the shadows, her soul enlarging. As he faces Medusa, Stein predicts Medusa's strategy: she will try to block all of them from getting any further, then place Crona as the next barrier to prevent the DWMA's members from catching up to where Free is protecting Eruka's black blood briefcase. Therefore, Stein as the strongest of the four meisters will take down the first barrier, Medusa, and Black Star will use his soul wavelength to take down the second barrier, Crona, so that Kid, as the most mobile, and Maka can get past these two barriers, catch up to Free and Eruka, and prevent the release of the Kishin.

Having overheard Stein's strategy, Medusa begins her chant, summoning Vector Arrow X3 to knock down the three students. While Kid uses Death Slide on Beelzebub to skate past the arrows, Black Star unleashes Tsubaki's Uncanny Sword mode to cut through Medusa's arrows.

Maka, though impressed by Black Star's success, is left as the last to break through the arrows, making her the focus of Medusa's attacks. Maka determines she has no time to dodge the arrows, so she must break through the center of Medusa's path, without slowing down or be cut down when the arrows circle around to the center of her path. Medusa notices Maka close her eyes to avoid seeing her arrows, hence "to eliminate the fear." But Maka can still hear the arrows. As Soul calls out to her, the arrows pierce through Maka's body. But this image turns out to be only Maka's imagined scenario. Therefore, rather than ignore fear, Maka uses it to make herself run faster before the arrows can kill her. Surprised at Maka's success, Medusa turns to attack again, only for her next move to be disrupted by Soul Menace, courtesy of Stein. Stunned, Medusa still is able to mock Stein that Crona awaits his students.

Elsewhere, as they still face Medusa, Spirit can hear that exact sound from his daughter. Stein explains Maka disregarded his orders and is fighting Crona, shocking the father but amusing Medusa. When Medusa claims Crona will kill Maka, Spirit responds that his daughter is not weak. Spirit then proceeds to remind Medusa that, as the only Death Scythe currently in Death City, he must not fail to stop Asura's resurrection, or he would never be able to face his fellow Death Scythes. Spirit then behaves perversely as usual by wishing he had been the one to strip Medusa of her lab coat—and expressing his annoyance that Stein got to dance with her instead of him. Medusa interrupts, annoyed at how foolish Stein and Spirit are for joking around. Stein decides to fulfill Medusa's wish, charging up his soul ready to fight her. Medusa jokes that she is so impressed with her opponent that she would not mind another dance with Stein. Stein responds that she should not bother, "not with feet like that."

Medusa then realizes that Stein has used Soul Thread Sutures from his previous Soul Menace attack, using his soul wavelength to stitch her feet to the floor. Surprised at Stein's precision, Spirit brags that it is through a weapon's ability to increase a meister's control over their wavelength that the duo were able to plant Medusa in one spot long enough for additional attacks. Stein performs Soul Menace again, the sutures ripping from Medusa's feet and slamming her against the wall, where new sutures form from the wall along the edges of her entire body, keeping her immobile so Stein may perform Consecutive Soul Menace, Three-Fold. Medusa coughs up blood. Stein prepares to conclude the battle with a Two-Palm Soul Menace. Medusa sneers, informing Stein that he is about to move in the wrong direction.

Vector storm

Medusa uses Vector Storm to knock Stein back.

Stein looks down to see an arrow as large as him on the floor. With this Vector Plate, Medusa's magic causes the arrow, and Stein with it, to move rapidly in the direction the arrow is pointing, away from her, knocking Stein back but still on his feet. After one of her snakes emerges to cut the sutures off of her body, Medusa creates another Vector Plate, which allows her to travel along it to perform three more Vector Plates that increase her speed and point at Stein so she may kick him in the head to the floor. Stein lands atop another Vector Plate, pointed at Medusa, at which point the speed of the plate coupled with her punch will knock down Stein again. Stein sutures his own body, hence the Vector Plate as well, to the ground, preventing both the scientist and the Plate from moving. Therefore, Medusa uses a long-distance attack, sending Light Serpent, one of her snakes, forward to attack Stein. Stein then makes his move: he removes his sutures, causing the Vector Plate to move forward so he may dodge the Light Serpent, regain his upright position, and strike Medusa down with his Death Scythe. But as soon as Stein is within striking distance, Medusa unleashes Vector Storm, numerous arrows erupting from the floor cutting into Stein and knocking him back again.

The snakes continue slithering away from Medusa's body, as she claims to have one thousand snakes in her body, all of which will keep Stein away from her. Stein, annoyed, asks how Medusa can claim to be afraid of close combat when so many of her moves are short-range. Stein assumes such remarks are indicative of her fallacious nature, suitable for a witch who infiltrates the DWMA as a physician. Medusa smiles innocently, claiming that she was honest when she offered Stein an opportunity to work with her, as a fellow scientist, to unleash the Kishin. As Spirit looks worried, Medusa explains that the DWMA is hardly a place for someone like Stein, who is at heart not a teacher but a researcher. As she speaks, Medusa produces a circle of Vector Plates around herself and Stein. The arrows all point towards her, so that anyone will launch Stein forward so she may use her short-range attacks to seize her prey.

Stein then asks Medusa to explain how she "abducted" Crona to make into a Kishin. Stein reasons that Medusa knows Crona has no potential to become a Kishin, so instead Medusa would risk breaking into the DWMA to use Black Blood to resurrect the Kishin. Therefore, Medusa must think Crona is an "experiment [that] failed," which a sneering Stein refers to as the "best news this year." Medusa chuckles in response, claiming her primary research has always been the Black Blood, so anything that aids her in that research—whether putting Black Blood into Crona, or using Black Blood to resurrect the Kishin—all benefits her anyway to learn more about the properties of Black Blood. She also corrects Stein, as she did not abduct Crona. She reveals that Crona is her own child.

As their fight continues, both Stein and Medusa can sense Maka and Crona's actions. Spirit asks what is happening. Stein hesitates before answering: "The Black Blood has begun to stir." Medusa keeps her Vector Plates encircled around her and Stein. She is pleased that her victory is secured: Maka and Crona's fight shows the Black Blood "is finally complete," which promises her success once her team injects it into the Kishin.

Soul Eater Episode 23 HD - Vector Plate circle

Medusa's Vector Plates surround her and Stein

Stein still wants to know, as he asked before, what Medusa will do with Crona upon resurrecting Asura. Medusa stares blankly, so Stein persists while Spirit, within his weapon, shakes with anger. Medusa calls Stein's question "boring": as she has abused her own child throughout raising them, Crona now lacks independence, which makes them a "failure" for her plans. Stein again asks what Medusa will do with her own child, but as he does so, he removes the cigarette from his mouth—and crushes it as he clenches his fist in anger.

Medusa chuckles, and Spirit finally speaks, demanding she stop. Medusa is amused that these two men want her to say what they already know: she will abandon Crona because she thinks it irrational to keep what is no longer valuable. If these two are so concerned, Medusa reasons, she can give them her "hand-me-down," perhaps for one of Stein's experiments. Stein's eyes twitch with anger as he shouts and begins to move towards Medusa—but he stops, as Spirit has transformed out of his weapon form, marched to Medusa, and seized her by her collar. Medusa is unimpressed, goading Spirit to speak despite his anger preventing him from forming the statement he wants to make. She knocks Spirit back with Vector Storm, not killing him but sending him onto his backside beside Stein. As his meister chastises him for his recklessness, Spirit begins crying, prompting more frustration from Stein at such immaturity. But Spirit counters that being a parent makes him realize that there is something unforgivable but unspeakable to abandon a child. Stein speaks for Spirit, explaining that a parent must have faith in their child, if the child is ever to receive faith from anyone. Spirit stands and announces that they will defeat Medusa—prompting Stein to reply sardonically that such was their plan anyway.

Soul Eater Episode 23 HD - Tail Snake

Medusa using her Tail Snake.

Stein worries that time is running out to catch up to his students to stop the Kishin's resurrection. Stein rushes at Medusa to attack with Soul Sutures again, but he cannot get close enough to the witch, who balances on a Vector Arrow seeming to extend from her cloak and embedded into the floor, which allows her to levitate around Stein, kicking at him before retreating to her original position. From her back emerge three more Vector Arrows, which Stein manages to disable or dodge. Medusa swings along her Vector Arrow, outside of Stein's reach to slice at her with Spirit.

Stein realizes Medusa's snakes allow her to stay balanced no matter her position, while Spirit recognizes that Medusa is purposefully delaying them, not trying to kill the two but occupying them. Spirit calls out Stein for his lack of intimidation, but the scientist muses that Medusa also knows that he is not much of a combatant when he is distracted, forced to curb any madness he feels. Therefore, Stein must focus not on what is around him but removing irrelevant thoughts. As he tends to work his best when he allows his curiosity to draw his focus, he therefore focuses on just Medusa.

Stein begins cracking his neck, as Spirit senses the scientist's tension alleviates. As Stein then tightens the screw through his head, Spirit remembers what a sadistic pleasure-seeker his meister is, as the mad scientist announces his intention to dismantle Medusa. The witch chuckles at how adorable Stein can be, but Spirit smirks upon seeing how madly his meister grins.

Medusa again asks Stein to turn against the Academy and to join her, as he should know this unchanging world does not suit someone like him who desires to make this world evolve, which he could accomplish with the Kishin's power. Stein only grins more madly and tells of how, in his youth, scientists diagnosed his "violent tendencies and selfish thoughts."

Stein runs forward, swinging Spirit at Medusa's head. As she dodges, Stein continues to attack and rant, telling how those scientists seemed elated to examine him like he was some puzzle to solve, to learn what trauma made Stein the kind of person he is. With one hand, Medusa blocks Spirit and thrusts towards Stein, but the scientist laughs, pushing the Death Scythe's staff against Medusa's forearms, struggling to knock her off balance. Stein then explains there is no puzzle to why he is who he is: he has always enjoyed ripping apart things.

Episode 23 - Medusa and Stein battle

Medusa dodging Stein with her Tail Snake.

Medusa still smiles, asking whether Stein thinks she is similar to those same doctors. The Vector Arrows extending from her back come forward to knock Stein back again. Stein continues, claiming in kindergarten that he was nauseated how his classmates would listen to their teacher, play games, and took notes, all lacking originality. Medusa expresses similar disgust, albeit at how dull is Stein's tale. She sends more Vector Arrows to slice at Stein, who runs forward. Rather than slash at Medusa, he aims for the Vector Arrow wedged into the floor that keeps her aright, forcing Medusa to leap into a somersault and plant that same arrow into the floor again. Stein turns, hoping to slice through her this time, but she already blocks with another arrow. Medusa concludes that Stein's attacks are also repetitive, hence dull.

As he presses Spirit's blade against Medusa's arrow, trying to slice through it, Stein persists, explaining that what he is saying is his response to her invitation for an alliance. He continues: with age, his madness increased. He asks her what made him curb his madness, and she answers: fear. Stein confirms that his madness was limited by how afraid he was of the person he would become. Yet the desire to do as he wished persisted, which led him to realize that he needed a guide—not "a greedy despot" but "the rule of a god without an ego." As Stein speaks, his resonance with Spirit increases. Medusa offers to let Stein create a new world with her, but he responds that she speaks with ego. Medusa disagrees but admits such will be "the standard before long," one for Stein to follow.

Episode 23 - Medusa uses snake to create a drill

Medusa uses her Vector Arrows to create a drill that stabs Stein.

Medusa slices at Stein, who maneuvers around her attack while the witch flips. Finally, Stein has forced Medusa onto her feet—but she wraps Vector Arrows around her right hand, and those arrows begin to spin like a drill that she stabs into Stein's abdomen. Blood escapes from this wound, as well as from Stein's mouth, as Spirit calls out to him and admonishes him not to attack with only sheer force. Stein falls onto his knee and hand, but still he can ask Medusa what will happen to his "immoral feelings for gods before ego becomes the standard." Stein therefore concludes that he cannot join Medusa. The smile remains on her face as she retracts the drill-like arrows from her hand. Medusa responds she just will not be able to get through to Stein. The mad scientist charges his left hand for a Soul Force attack and announces his desire to rip Medusa apart without losing his immoral feelings, his very soul, which Medusa assumes is how he channels his madness.

As Stein rushes towards Medusa, numerous Vector Arrows extend from her back as she stretches out her arms. These arrows stab through Stein's limbs as he screams—yet she is shocked as he persists, bringing his arm all the way towards her to shove Soul Force through her chest. Although held up by Stein's hand through her chest, her toes still touch the ground, but she wobbles. The Vector Arrows—her very snakes—slither and dissolve. Blood drips. Medusa coughs up blood. Spirit announces that Stein has defeated Medusa but that the damage was too much for just one hit. Medusa says she has overestimated Stein, as she lifts her head and mocks how pathetic is this one attack after his rejection of her alliance. One more Vector Arrow emerges from her back, held above his head ready to decapitate him.

Stein orders Spirit not to move. Medusa's arrow descends—and stops right above Stein's neck. She realizes this tail snake, as well as her entire body, is immobilized. Stein begins Soul-thread Diffusion Sutures, but Medusa is confused: Stein has not sewn her to anything—until the threads appear along her very body, blocking every nerve ending so she may not move. Medusa goads Stein, asking why he does not execute her now with his Death Scythe. But Spirit cannot move either: the accuracy of such an enormous wavelength as Stein's requires absolute immobility. While Stein shuts his eyes so to force himself to stand still, Medusa mocks the meister for such a desperate, energy-consuming, hence short-lived attack, asking how he will fight once he removes these threads when the snake is ready to decapitate him. All Medusa needs to do is wait for the Kishin's resurrection, then Stein will die.

As their battle continues, Stein and Medusa are still at a stalemate, as neither can move without risking fatal injury. Spirit thinks this gamble requires that they take the offensive, while Stein anticipates he is most likely to lose, his only motivation to maintain his focus being his desire to dismember this witch. As Stein resolves to take a chance, a mad grin forms on his face, then on Medusa's, as the underground starts to quake. Fearful, Spirit asks what is happening, only to realize that the Kishin's madness is increasing, which means that Kid's group has failed. Medusa chuckles.

Medusa continues to cackle at her opponents' failure. Stein pulls back, letting out a bellow as with one swing of Spirit he sliced Medusa's apart, slicing through both of her arms and her waist. Her arms dissolve into Vector Arrows, her eyes lose focus, and a sickening sound of wetness is heard as her seeming corpse falls to the floor. As Medusa's own blood floats upward in the shape of her own Vector Arrows, Spirit is shocked. More bloody arrows undulate out of Medusa's waist, as the witch, still alive, adjusts her mouth and stares at her opponent. Eventually, her lower body dissolves completely into the bloody arrows, explode from her and raining down upon Stein and soaking the scientist as he cackles madly.

Soul Eater Episode 24 HD - Medusa is dead

Medusa after being sliced in half by Stein.

Stein then asks Medusa about how disappointing it must be, as he places a cigarette in his mouth and removes a match to light it. He explains that the Kishin's revival distracted her long enough for him to kill her. He then states how he believes that he only won because of the Kishin's revival. Spirit and Medusa look at the scientist as he realizes that, in the end, he has failed to stop the Kishin's revival. But then Stein extends his arms outward to look up at the blood raining down upon him, as he concludes with a mad cackle, how refreshing this experience has felt. Stein is now affected by the increased madness of the Kishin.

The seemingly lifeless corpse of Medusa, or rather than her corpse above the waist, still lies on the floor. A discarded still smoking cigarette skips along her body onto the floor. Stein expects that Death has fought Asura, and as the madness has faded, the Kishin must have escaped. As Stein muses, he seems not to notice Vector Arrows snaking along the floor. Spiritbemoans his failure to be at Death's side, anticipating his presence may have allowed Death to stop Asura's escape. Stein admonishes Spirit to stop worrying how everyone will blame him for this failure, as the battle is not finished yet so long as Asura remains a threat now to the entire world.

Soul Eater Episode 24 HD - Snake carrying Medusa's soul

Medusa's soul in a snake.

As Stein finishes his point, the Vector Arrows wrap around his shoulders and neck, and these arrows tug upward the limbless but still living Medusa, who bites into Stein's shoulder. Stein struggles to tear her off himself, finally slamming her body down to the floor. Although facing her own demise, Medusa smirks and says, "I love you, you know." Although his left shoulder is cut, with just his left arm Stein thrusts Spirit downward, slamming his blade through Medusa's chest, seeming to be the fatal blow. Stein criticizes the dying witch not to speak such lies: "You're just like me. You can't possibly understand love." Medusa chuckles, as her body dissolves into Vector Arrows, which then dissipate. Spirit is shocked how this "kind of woman" would "extinguish her soul." Stein says nothing, holding to his shoulder.

The next day, far from the Academy, there is a canal, with a drainage tunnel. From its shadows, two dots of light are visible, revealed to be the eyes of a snake, that snake being Medusa. This snake, covered in arrows, slithers into the water below.

Trial Enrollment arc[]

Soul Eater Chapter 24 - Medusa infected Stein

Madness in the form of Medusa overwhelms Stein.

Medusa appears to Stein in the form of madness. This image of Medusa, dressed in her DWMA physician attire, urges Stein to dissect all persons around him, as she grasps his body, flirting with him. Stein strikes the image, momentarily shattering the illusion. But now Medusa stands again, in her witch attire, as she desires to see Stein "be the kind of man I like."

Bodyguard arc[]

In the desert, Stein's madness inflicts upon him again an image of Medusa, who chastises him for attempting to eliminate his fears. After all, Medusa reminds Stein, the DWMA teaches that it is fear that creates order. But Medusa can see that Stein is the kind of person who desires to be liked by others, to make others think he is a good person. Yet his simultaneous desire for power means that he will have to break those rules. Medusa tells Stein that fear is irrational because there are so fewer dangers in the actual world than what he fears. Meanwhile, while people like Stein cannot achieve greater power, the DWMA is left to amass what it thinks is power in order to maintain a hegemonic illusion of order.

Stein seems hesitant to dispute that indeed the DWMA maintains an order of the status quo, yet such order is imposed by a god. Medusa responds that there is not an absolute: in order for an idea to exist, its opposite must also exist for the sake of context and contrast. But Medusa has another idea: what if this reality no longer existed as is? At that point, the absolute need not be Death but someone else. Medusa suggests that Stein, as a fellow scientist, cease acting defensiveness and instead act offensively, to attack. As Stein is left silent with these thoughts, the illusion of Medusa leaves him, alone.

Reunion Express arc[]

Medusa, still possessing a snake takes possession of a dog. Later, a mother and a daughter walk by the alleys discussing their dislike for snakes and spiders. The daughter, Rachel Boyd, notices the dog poking around. Rachel dashes for the dog, her mother trying to catch up to tell her not to touch dirty dogs. As Rachel reaches her hand to the dog, she spies the emerging from the animal's mouth, which enters the girl's mouth. Rachel's mother arrives, too busy admonishing her daughter to notice the snake entering Rachel. Although drooling a bit, Rachel happily agrees to her mother's order to go home.

At home, her mother takes notice of her strange behavior, but brushes it off nervously. The next morning, while waiting for her meal, one of Arachne's spiders appears in the kitchen. Unable to find a newspaper with which to smash the arachnid, Rachel's mother uses one of her husband's pornographic magazines. But Rachel is undeterred: not looking behind her, she smashes the spider, barehanded, the innards of the creature splashed across her hand. At this moment, Medusa's voice emerges: she realizes her sister, Arachne, has discovered her. Rachel pulls her hoodie to cover her head, saying she is departing to go play. Before her mother can stop her, Rachel has already disappeared from the front lawn.

Medusa Controlling Rachel's Body

Medusa controlling Rachel's body.

Medusa then presents herself to Arachne at Baba Yaga Castle. Medusa criticizes Arachne for spying on her with a spider; Arachne criticizes Medusa for acting so fearless entering her castle and not willing to delegate this introduction to one of her underlings. Medusa says, as with her attack on the DWMA, she likes handling a task herself so to be authentic. Arachne tells Medusa such first-hand work puts her at risk of dying, her current childish form the proof of that fact. Medusa replies she uses this childish form to her advantage: who would suspect a child? Arachne also wants to know how, as she learned, Medusa could survive having her body cut yet “scatter your soul” to survive. Medusa explains she couldn’t allow [her] soul to be eaten by Stein and Death Scythe.” It was by forcing Stein to deliver a finishing blow that she split her soul into “tiny pieces.” The release of the Kishin increased Medusa’s magic so she could have her soul regathered inside the body of a snake she had set loose earlier.

Arachne accuses Medusa of having betrayed her in their fight 800 years ago against Lord Death, and she refuses to simply let Medusa leave so easily. Medusa attempts to play off the encounter as a sisterly reunion, one they really must do more often—until her exit is blocked by Mosquito, Giriko, and Mifune. The Arachnophobia agent looks nervous. But when Medusa refuses to fight back and continues her exit, Arachne allows her to proceed. Arachne anticipates Medusa will make a mistake soon and will be caught in her “web,” while Medusa plans to “slip through the cracks in [Arachne’s] network.”

The nervous Arachnophobia agent offers to escort Medusa out of the castle, but as they walk, they discuss mentally through the snake within that agent’s body: she is Eruka, brought back into Medusa’s employ. Eruka explains “the others,” Free and the Mizune sisters, are already uncover as well as Arachnophobia agents. Eruka asks what is Medusa’s next plan, and the snake witch says she has to retrieve “something” she left behind in Death City.

Soul Eater Episode 31 HD - Medusa finds Crona

Medusa finds Crona in Death City.

In Death City, Medusa finds Crona in an alley having just left a party hosted by Death the Kid. Seated atop a dumpster, Medusa feigns surprise that her child recognizes her despite her childish body, but Crona wants to know why Medusa has returned to Death City. Medusa claims her desire is to reunite with Crona, worried for her child. But rather than bring Crona back with her, Medusa orders Crona to stay at the DWMA, to continue to serve as her spy within the academy. Crona stammers, confused that Medusa assumes Crona's time at the DWMA was to spy for her. Medusa claims Crona is being modest, refusing to think Crona would be at the DWMA for any reason other than to be spy on behalf of Medusa. Medusa informs Crona that a secret vault is inside the DWMA (one that, Medusa does not say to Crona, holds demon tools), assigning Crona to locate it.

When Crona refuses in fear of betraying friends at the academy, Medusa asks, "You'll do it for your mom, right?" Even as memories of Maka flash by, Crona assumes a look akin to a previous mad appearance, agreeing to fulfill the requests of Medusa. As Medusa leaves, Ragnarok chuckles at the more interesting development, as a nervous and shocked Crona continues to smile madly. On the outskirts of Death City that night, Medusa turns back, chuckling upon discovering that a madness swirls through that city. She looks forward to what this madness will cause to transpire within Death City.

When Crona returns to their room, Eruka, disguised in her frog form, arrives at the window. Through one of the snakes implanted in Eruka, Medusa speaks to Crona, communicating how happy she is with Crona’s performance and that she has a new mission for her child. Learning that Stein is now partnered with Marie, Medusa has an idea to “exploit [Marie's] kindness.” Medusa orders Eruka to hand Crona a pen, which contains within it “a bug” to plant into Stein’s lab. The bug itself, revealed to be a tiny snake containing within itself a listening device, which not only can listen to Marie’s conversations with others, but also can negate her healing wavelength and in fact augment the madness within Stein. Afterwards, Crona heads back to their room, takes a pillow from the bed and crawls into the corner of the room. Feeling the presence of madness around them, the pressure from Medusa, and the guilt for infecting Marie, Crona, despite wearing a crazed smile, cries.

"BREW" - The Tempest arc[]

Episode 36 - Medusa's Faction

Medusa successfully acquires BREW.

In her lair, Medusa awaits the arrival of Eruka and the Mizune Sisters and their delivery of the real Brew. Eruka explains that, as the magnetic field blocked Arachne from spying on Lost Island through her spiders, the Mizune were able to enter the field, retrieve Brew, and leave behind a replica for which the DWMA and Arachnophobia to battle. Medusa also credits their success to her snake within Marie's body, which at the precise moment Stein would need to resonate with Marie to battle Mosquito for Brew, unleashes such powerful madness within Stein to incapacitate him. Eruka is shocked at how much preplanning Medusa had, and that victory emerged thanks to one tiny snake. Clutching Brew, Medusa promises to use the tool to unleash a tempest that will result in the goals she has planned for the DWMA, Arachnophobia, and the Kishin.

Internal Investigation arc[]

Upon receiving a daytime progress report that the location of the demon tools remains unknown, Medusa instructs Crona to continue the search. Medusa also explains that she is returning with Eruka to Death City, as she senses a madness swirling through the area, “the kind only others with madness can feel.”

After Maka learns that Medusa has survived and that Crona is the spy, she runs away, but in the process, knocks into a little girl, that little girl being Medusa in possession of Rachel Boyd's body. Later on, that same day at night, Medusa witnesses Joe Buttataki's murder at the hands of an unknown assailant. Standing atop a roof, while her snakes circle around her, she smiles insanely.

At some point afterwards, Eruka, in frog form, brags to Medusa, how well they have driven Stein into madness. With them are two of the Mizune Family in mice form and Crona. Eruka then asks why Medusa is so quiet and appearing so sad. Medusa explains that she was thinking about the now deceased Joe Buttataki: before his death, was aware of her and the other witches' presence, despite Soul Protect, which suggests meisters are evolving in their skill at Soul Perception. Eruka is less concerned, as Joe is dead, but Medusa warns that another living meister could develop this enhanced Soul Perception, which may require killing that person. Crona looks away, nervous. Medusa also realizes that, even with she, Eruka, and two of the Mizune sisters, that number does not match the number of other witches she could sense in Death City.

Clown arc[]

Soul Eater Chapter 44 - Medusa

Medusa wants to make a deal.

In the dungeons of DWMA, Medusa, is silent as an annoyed Spirit asks this "snake bitch" why she is so much smaller. Medusa yawns as Spirit reminds her of her crimes of releasing the Kishin and with him madness. Medusa asks where is Stein, until she remembers, with a devious smirk, that the scientist has departed. Spirit is surprised how much Medusa knows when she has not been within the DWMA for some time. As Medusa obviously has so much information that she can offer, confirmed by the list of three witches she provided, she proposes a deal: she will provide the location of Arachnophobia's headquarters, Baba Yaga Castle. And as she knows that the DWMA will not trust her, she'll sweeten the deal: she also will provide them with the real Brew. Spirit stands shocked: Arachnophobia does not actually possess Brew, but Medusa does, and she is willing to give it to Death.

Operation Capture Baba Yaga Castle arc[]

Arriving in front of Medusa's cell, Maka realizes that she actually can sense the witch's soul. Within the cell, Medusa, feigning helplessness, asks for the people outside to bring her some water. Maka responds by kicking the door and demanding to know Crona's location. Feigning curiosity, Medusa asks who is speaking and pretends she herself does not know where Crona is. Frustrated that Medusa claims not to even remember who she is, Maka demands answers. Soul advises Maka that Medusa will never tell the truth and that it is pointless to anger herself. Soul then turns to the "bitch" of a witch to tell her that she should acclimate herself to "a pitch-black solitary confinement cell" for the rest of her life, suitable for such a "gutter hag." Putting an arm around Maka's shoulder, Soul guides her away, as Maka calls back to the "bitch" to expect to hear from the students again. When the students are away from her cell, Medusa chuckles: she knew fully well that it was Soul and Maka outside of her cell, and she knows DWMA will have no choice but to agree to her terms for her help.

Later, Spirit arrives in front of Medusa's cell. After listening to a prison guard's warnings about opening her door, Spirit enters with a lantern and Medusa's dinner. As Medusa feigns petulance at how bright the lantern is in the dark cell, she has Spirit spoonfeed her. Spirit is amused, finding this practice similar to how he used to feed his baby daughter. Spirit then reminds Medusa that she herself has a child, Crona, and out of that concern as a parent had best release her grasp upon Rachel Boyd's body.

Medusa claims she holds onto Rachel's body while she recharges her magic, at which point she will give up the child's body. Spirit chastises Medusa for effectively holding a child hostage, but Medusa says that it is not Rachel that protects her from DWMA: it is the information she is willing to trade for her guaranteed safety. Although Spirit admits that Sid Barrett was able to find Brew just where Medusa promised, he thinks Medusa is still lying. Medusa requests that Spirit at least remove her restraints so she can loosen up, as he must recognize she cannot escape an academy full of meisters and weapons. As Spirit removes the bonds, he reminds her that she could have used her magic to remove them at any time—but Medusa takes pleasure from coercing Spirit to do so. As Medusa stretches in Rachel's body, Spirit's parental reflex kicks in: he cannot resist helping her pat the dust off her clothes.

ShinigamiChop2

Death Shinigami Chops Medusa.

Medusa announces her new demand: whereas the information about the witches within Death City and Brew's location were free gifts to DWMA, she wants to speak with Lord Death in person. While Lord Death does not trust Medusa, he determines her information about Arachnophobia will be useful. Medusa looks around nervously upon her entrance, claiming this is her first time encountering Death "face-to-face." She mocks Spirit for demonstrating any concern about her nervousness. As Medusa stands before Death, his body seems to rumble. Death announces Medusa's crimes for putting the world into chaos—then unleashes a Shinigami Chop. Medusa—and Spirit—are stunned. As Spirit criticizes the reaper, Medusa remembers her hatred for "this stupid school culture" like the reaper's behavior.

Death then picks up Medusa by the back of her hoodie and holds her five-year-old body in the air, demanding explanation about her deal. As Medusa realizes Death is toying with her, she struggles to cover her exposed underwear. She is then annoyed at Spirit's reverie about how adorable Medusa—and his own daughter—looked in baby pumpkins pants. But remembering she must adapt her performance around Death and Spirit's silly behavior, she asks to be set down and seat herself to begin their discussion—only to find Death and Spirit debating whether it is acceptable for adults to wear children's underwear without it seeming kinky. Annoyed at "these assholes," Medusa shouts at the fools. Death apologizes for such discussions in front of a child—then picks Medusa up again by her hoodie, again exposing her underwear, and again making Spirit giddy over children's underwear. Fed up, Medusa threatens to kill Spirit with her vector arrows and attempts to depart. After Spirit and Death debate the merits of running gags, they promise to take the discussion more seriously if Medusa will stay in the room.

Medusa proposes her terms: she will reveal the location of Arachnophobia's headquarters at Baba Yaga Castle, including how to capture the castle, if and only if she is given full command of this DWMA operation. Spirit is outraged, but Medusa knows he has no other option.

Over tea with Death and Medusa, Spirit advises providing Medusa not full command but only a remote post, away from DWMA key agents. Medusa refuses: she must be on "the battlefield." But Medusa then clarifies that this operation is not about a "massive battle" but a low-risk covert mission consisting of a few DWMA agents along with her associates Mizune, Free, and Eruka.

As Arachnophobia will expect DWMA to attack directly in the open, Medusa instead will lead a small force so to minimize the number of potential deaths for DWMA agents. A few agents is all that is necessary to take down an entire organization: Medusa cannot resist mentioning that the Academy fell to just four people (she, Eruka, Free, and Mizune). Death is hesitant, pointing out that his concern is not about minimizing his causalities but trusting those agents to Medusa's command.

Medusa also wants to decide which DWMA agents to include, with only students as they are less likely to "overthink" her orders (hinting they will follow her orders without question). This team will include someone with excellent soul perception (shown later to be Maka Albarn), someone who can make clear decisions and calm the team (shown later to be Ox Ford), and someone with brute strength (specifically citing Black☆Star as an example but who is shown later to be Kilik Rung). As she was a physician at the Academy, she will make the protection of their students her top priority.

As Spirit criticizes including students on such a dangerous mission, especially with Medusa in charge, the witch counters that, with her magic, she is the only one present at the Death Weapon Meister Academy who can get Death's soldiers through Arachne's Sensor Net, a spiderweb around Baba Yaga Castle that, if tripped, alerts Arachne immediately to anyone's arrival. Because this Sensor Net is reconfigured every few days, Medusa's intelligence will soon be outdated unless they begin the operation soon.

Soul Eater Chapter 46 - Sensor threads

Medusa pointing out Arachne's Sensory Threads to Kilik.

The operation soon commences with Medusa's team heading to South America, the location of Baba Yaga Castle. The boat carrying the team reaches the shore, as all must proceed on foot, Medusa clearing a path with Vector Arrows to cut brush away. Despite Maka's hostility to Medusa, the witch says she requires her Soul Perception to locate Arachne. Kilik is less friendly than Maka, admitting his desire to kick the witch's ass. Medusa demands Kilik stop—not because of his shouts but because he is about to knock into Arachne's Sensor Threads, alerting Arachnophobia to their location. Medusa says she is committed to protecting this team, or else Arachne will win. Medusa then orders the students to walk forward in single file, as her magic detects the path to take away from any more Sensor Threads.

The students walk by the river, with darker lines like spiderweb crossing the liquid's surface and nearby mushrooms and plants. Concerned this water is a trap, Kid orders Patty not to "do anything stupid." Meanwhile, Maka notices Fire and Thunder crying. Kilik explains that, as Earth Shamans, the siblings can hear Nature itself crying. Medusa agrees, sensing that Arachnophobia's demon tool development has polluted the river with magic. While Medusa compares the cries of Nature to the cries of children to their parents, Soul is not impressed: "You get off playing all high-and-mighty" after turning the world into madness, all because she has no bit of compassion. Medusa remains silent.

Soul Eater Chapter 46 - Amazon Monster

Medusa's team faces the Squid(?), a result of Arachne's magic pollution.

A splash comes up from the water. Soul asks Maka to sense the presence, and she announces it is a soul, not that of a human, but of something big. The creature reveals itself, a large monster rising from the water, its eyes mad, its tentacles lapping out of the water. Medusa realizes the magic pollution has mutated the local animals into monsters. Soul and other weapons transform, and Medusa orders her students to spread out. As the meisters take to the trees, the monster releases its tentacles, reaching to pin the students against those branches. With her chant, Medusa summons Vector Arrows, cutting through the tentacles and saving Maka and others. Ox gets to the ground, unleashing Lightning King Quake and sending the creature away.

But Maka senses the creature still lurks under the water, waiting to strike again. Tentacles rise out of the water, almost slicing at Ox's face. An arrow appears below Ox's feet, as Medusa uses Vector Plate to carry a surprised Ox away from danger. From the branches above, Kid fires upon the monster, but Maka sees no effect by those wavelength bullets or Ox's lightning. Medusa explains the monster's skin is strengthened by magic, requiring the students to peel away the skin. Medusa first will stab at the monster with an arrow, then she will use her magic to break down the skin's coating at that wound. After enchanting Kilik's weapons with Vector Boost to double the power of his punches, he will punch at the wound to disable the monster. She orders the other students to back up her and Kilik. Medusa releases Vector Arrows at the monster's forehead, then performs the magic spells Analyze and Decompose to open the hole in the monster's skin. Following Medusa's order, Kilik leaps at the monster, drawing upon Vector Boost to strengthen his Triple F attack. The monster is downed, and Medusa brings Kilik back to the team with a Vector Plate. Both Kilik and Maka are shocked at the extent of Medusa's magic, but the witch orders the team to keep walking.

The team arrives at a mineshaft dug earlier but now used by Medusa to gain entrance to Baba Yaga Castle. They are met by an Arachnophobia agent, revealed to be one of the Mizune Sisters, who will guide them inside. Medusa orders the students to follow.Medusa uses Vector Arrows to light the way through the mineshaft. Because Arachnophobia's security increases after sunset, she advises camping out for the night within the mineshaft. She warns DWMA students to be careful.

Kilik interrupts, holding out to Kid the soul of the squid monster that they eliminated. Upon collecting the soul, both Soul and Medusa notice that a light emanates from Kid's back pocket. When Soul comments on this fact, Kid is surprised anyone could sense that light. Kid claims he must have left the flashlight he was holding in his back pocket and switched it on. Medusa realizes the truth: Kid is keeping Brew in his pocket, which activated upon the use of shinigami powers. Medusa considers when Kid intends to use that demon tool, whether as a threat to her.

Medusa is interrupted by Mizune with news to boost students' morale: Kim Diehl and Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupre are located here at Baba Yaga Castle. Kilik refuses to believe Kim, even as a witch, would join with Arachnophobia. Medusa responds that Arachne is very good at persuading victims by manipulating their weaknesses, drawing in such persons until, like a spider, she catches her prey in her web. Soul calls Arachnophobia a religious cult, but Medusa says it is that very reason why Arachne's organization has enlarged, because all members worship Arachne like a maternal figure. Once DWMA can kill Arachne and her top leaders, then the entire organization will fall apart on its own. As Medusa directs the students to march forward, she concludes with a reminder that their mission now includes the opportunity to see and free Kim and Jacqueline. This news leaves Ox Ford quiet.

Once the students reach a portion of the mineshaft, its girders twisted to hold up the tunnel, Medusa orders the students to set up camp for the night to sleep. While her teammates unpack, Maka approaches and confronts Medusa, demanding to know Crona's location and why Medusa is willing to work with DWMA to take down Arachnophobia. Medusa responds by reminding Maka that, just like Maka's own father, she too is a parent concerned for her child: even if Crona is considered a terror, that child is her own, and she could not bear to be separated from Crona while that child resided away from her at the Academy. Stunned that Medusa would have any parental concern, Maka responds that Crona was much happier at the Academy and better off without such a malignant force like Medusa. She then reveals the truth to Maka that Crona was captured by Arachne and she intends to use them as a human sacrifice. Medusa sacrificed Brew and herself, a witch, to DWMA if it would save Crona. She concludes the discussion with an order for Maka to sleep before they continue their long trek through the mines into Baba Yaga Castle.

Soul Eater Chapter 47 - Medusa reunion

DWMA students, disguised as Arachnophobia agents, are joyful to be reunited with Medusa.

Because she can sense more Sensor Threads ahead, Medusa orders the students to be more careful as they follow her. Liz Thompson becomes exhausted, while Kid can sense "an unbelievable number of souls" ahead, which, as Medusa confirms, means they are already inside Baba Yaga Castle. Soul asks how they are to proceed, interrupted by someone waiting for them: Eruka, with a number of Arachnophobia outfits to disguise Medusa and DWMA students. After getting into disguise, Medusa separates from the group to get everything ready. When she's done, she finds the group and criticizes them, claiming she had been looking everywhere for them. Relieved, the entire group hugs her. Having guided the DWMA students to an isolated hallway, Medusa unmasks so she may direct the students to separate missions. Eight Demon Tool Locks, located in eight towers away from Baba Yaga Castle, generate magical gates preventing entrance into the Spider Queen Room, in the exact center of the castle and where Arachne sits upon her throne. While none of the DWMA students are magic users, and while there are eight Locks, Medusa argues that the students need only to destroy two of the eight locks, while Medusa and her team including Eruka will destroy the other six locks.

Medusa approaches Kilik Rung and Ox Ford, performing Vector Conduct to give them knowledge where to locate one of the eight towers: they now can see magic arrow-shaped markers she had planted around the Castle earlier and these arrows are visible only to her and those students, not to anyone else in Arachnophobia. Medusa assigns Kilik and Ox to one tower, and Kid and the Thompsons to a second. Medusa explains that, as soon as the eight locks are destroyed, she depends on Maka's soul perception to guide her through one more trap that lies between them and Arachne's room.

Later on, Medusa announces to Maka and Soul that Eruka and her other members are progressing, which requires that they hurry as well. Soul expresses concern to Maka that they are following this witch's orders. Maka is not sure whether Medusa is telling the truth about Arachne's kidnapping of Crona to use as a human sacrifice, but she cannot risk this chance to save her friend. Soul is not convinced, prompting Maka to ask whether he has a better suggestion other than to "bitch and whine." Medusa can no longer ignore this discussion, confronting the two to trust her for this attack to work. Maka tells Medusa to ignore Soul and continue with their mission. As they continued to walk Medusa had sensed BREW being activated.

Chapter 55 - Arachne's Magic Attack

Medusa, Maka and Soul hit by Arachne's Mind Attack.

Medusa, later on, announces to Maka and Soul that the magical barrier has dissipated. As such, Maka assumes her Soul Perception should be able to locate Crona's Soul Wavelength, to find where they are being held as Arachne's prisoner, but as she performs Soul Perception, Maka and Medusa both sense a magical attack coming towards them. Spiderweb threads, looking like strings, shoot at the trio. Under the influence of this magic, all three begin to hallucinate that they have been transformed into marionettes. After getting free of the hallucination, Maka asks Medusa what kind of magic just attacked them to produce such a powerful hallucination. Medusa explains that Arachne was attempting to coerce them to her side, attempting to take advantage of their weaknesses. Medusa then explains that, whereas direct attacks are effective against herself, they will not be against Arachne's magic. Instead, Arachne will attack from within, haunting their minds and souls. Therefore, Maka's Soul Perception and Anti-Demon Wavelength will be necessary to win this battle.

The doors of the Spider Queen Room open. Upon entering the room, now covered in spider webs, Medusa uses her Vector Arrows to push a path through the web, as Maka's Soul Perception guides them to Arachne's Soul Wavelength. Medusa strikes with more Vector Arrows to clear their path. Cutting through the last of the web, Medusa and Maka see Arachne seated on the pedestal of her throne, motionless. Maka is confused: while she can still sense Medusa's Soul Wavelength, she cannot sense Arachne's. Then Arachne's body falls to the floor, as if she is dead. While Maka looks down, the scene changes to the shadowy, spiderweb-covered ceiling, as if something hides there. In the ceiling's shadows, Soul, in weapon form, asks whether Arachne's lifeless body lying on the floor means that the witch is indeed dead. Medusa asks Maka whether her Soul Perception can find Arachne. Maka shudders as she hears something swirl in the room's shadows, as if the darkness is writhing.

Chapter 58 - Medusa defends Maka from Arachne's attack

Medusa using Vector Storm to protect Maka from Arachne's attack.

Maka and Medusa then look up to the ceiling at the madness coming towards them. Maka is surprised to sense that Arachne's presence is now within the madness itself filling up the throne room. Medusa explains that, as the body as nothing but a vessel, Arachne is truly within that madness only. Arachne's disembodied madness forms spider webs that scrape across the floor; Maka dodges, only for more to appear behind her—then, once Maka and Soul sense Arachne's presence within the web, disappears. Tendrils of the madness envelope Maka from above, until Medusa rushes towards the meister and uses Vector Storm to shield against Arachne. As the arrows wrap around the madness, Medusa performs Compress Vectors, decreasing the size of this overall essence of Arachne into a small ball that comes to rest upon the floor, but Medusa's Compress Vector fails: Arachne's madness explodes outward. Maka and Medusa are pushed back by the forceful exit yet stay on their feet. As Arachne explains to her sister that she has discarded her body to become madness herself, Medusa realizes Arachne's goal: she has become madness itself so she may attune her soul wavelength to that of the Kishin and then absorb Asura. Arachne confirms: With the world consumed in madness, she will provide a haven, hence Arachne will be not only the mother of all demon weapons but "the mother of all things."

Medusa mocks her older sister, claiming Arachne's so-called creation of weapons owes not to her but to following the instructions already written in the Book of Eibon. Arachne reminds Medusa that what matters is not the plan or even the implementation. Rather, Arachne argues, it is how well someone can gain something from these actions, and Medusa should know: she could not attract Franken Stein, despite her desire for Stein. Medusa smirks, claiming that of course anyone would be attracted to Stein, as he had creativity, which Arachne sorely lacks. Medusa then remembers that it was Arachne who mocked the possession of Rachel Boyd to assume this child's body, yet Arachne has given up her own body to look so "much more ridiculous" as just wisps of madness.

Arachne's madness approaches, then encircles Medusa in blackness. Medusa hallucinates: she finds herself initially alone, stuck on a spider's web. The mad black cloud forms off of Medusa's cloak, forming into a more spider-like form of her sister. Arachne still thinks Medusa looks ridiculous as a child but has no intention to plunge Medusa into madness, announcing that she instead will tear apart Medusa's mind to devour it, then sounds of eating are heard.

Outside of Medusa's hallucination, she collapses onto the floor. Soul recognizes Arachne as performing the same attack onto Medusa that she used against him earlier, but Arachne assures him that this magic is far stronger than anything she used against him. Medusa, still collapsed on the floor then observes the battle between both Maka and Arachne. She is impressed by Maka's Soul Perception and Anti-Demon Wavelength. After Maka and Soul are able to use Arachne's madness against her through her web, Medusa chuckles, realizing that by leaving the web connected longer than she needed to, Arachne left herself open to injury, dispelling all madness and leaving Arachne's body reconstituted for Maka to perform a physical, fatal attack. Still collapsed upon the floor, Medusa fears how dangerous Maka’s Anti-Demon Wavelength is to witches. Spying Arachne’s hollow, soulless body, Medusa smirks and she proceeds to leave Rachel's body to possess her sister's.

MedusaArachnieBody

Medusa now in possession of Arachne's body.

After Maka and Soul have successfully defeated Arachne, Maka senses a response: behind her, the corpse of Arachne rises, From Arachne’s body, Vector Arrows emerge, slicing into Maka’s side before either she or Soul can react. Arachne arises, Medusa now possesses the body of her dead sister. After possessing her sister's body, Medusa mocks Maka and reveals to her that everything she had told her about Crona before was a lie. She then concludes that, because of Maka’s far too powerful Soul Perception abilities, she is an impediment to the change this world demands, hence Maka must die.

Before Medusa can strike again, she is stopped by meister Enrique and Death Weapon Tezca Tlipoca. As the pair continue laughing, Medusa grows tired of this usual foolishness of the DWMA and attacks them. After transforming, Tezca tells Medusa that the DWMA will soon claim Baba Yaga Castle, hence the witch is in a losing battle.

Before Medusa continues to fight, she senses that Arachne’s body retains some consciousness, resisting Medusa’s full possession of the body. Due to this, she announces her departure. Before retreating, Maka calls out to her, demanding to know where Crona is. Medusa smirks and concludes that the Crona she knew is no longer the same person and she will not give them up to anyone like Maka. Having achieved her goals, with a Vector Plate, Medusa departs swiftly.

Grigori arc[]

Under a moonlit sky, a spider web of arrows appear around Medusa. She orders Crona: "It's time." Her child tilts back and screams.

Witch's Research arc[]

Medusa summons her Black Clown that she created to battle students Kilik Rung and Kim Diehl. From afar in her lair, she observes the battle through her crystal ball. Although she admits the Black Clown has weaker madness infection than "a true Clown," she is pleased to see this experiment underway so to identify how to improve her creation. Medusa also realizes that Arachne's goal to possess the same madness as the Kishin is not impossible, so long as Medusa can then attune herself to that wavelength via Soul Resonance—then possess the Kishin herself. But she anticipates that Noah remains a threat. Therefore, Medusa calls behind her to inform Crona that she is waiting for "the other experiment now," at which point an unseen Crona confirms.

During the fight, Kilik hurt his hand due to the hardened Black Blood and Medusa revealed that this was an experiment in hardening the Black Blood. The Black Clown didn't feel Kilik's attacks at all and Medusa commented that she was satisfied when the Clown was able put down attacks from Kilik, however, a powerful E3 blast, due to the Teamwise Soul Resonance produces an explosion that engulfs the Black Clown in a firebomb. Medusa looks through her crystal ball in shock, waiting for the flames to dissipate to confirm that indeed her creation has been completely destroyed. Medusa sees that the still living head of the Black Clown survives. Satisfied, she then orders the Clown to return to Crona before Spartoi discovers it, and the Clown follows through by performing Evaporation into the ground.

As both Black☆Star and Crona prepare to fight, Medusa waits for "the real experiment" to begin. She watches the battle through her crystal ball, as Crona initiates Scream Resonance and slashes at Black Star. But Medusa is surprised to see the ninja has barely moved. Black Star even dodges easily one of Crona's powerful attacks with a simple side-step. Black Star inhales deeply before letting out a loud yell, surprising Ragnarok. Almost instantly, Black Star is next to Crona, punching his opponent with multiple strikes. But Medusa is not impressed, recognizing that Black Blood has hardened Crona's bodies against such blows. Tsubaki urges Black Star to stop this assault before injuring his hands.Still watching the battle, Medusa is impressed that Black Star and Tsubaki's invocation of Crona's friends at the DWMA failed to get through her child's madness. As the battle was drawing to its conclusion, Medusa became shocked that Black Star managed to crack through Crona's Black Blood with only his fists. Medusa reminds herself not to take Black Star's big talk so lightly next time and is happy enough that the experiment demonstrated Crona's madness has stabilized. But Medusa intends to escape with her child before Black Star kills Crona.

Soul Eater Chapter 68 - Justin executing Medusa

Justin prepares to execute Medusa.

Before she plans her escape she is ambushed by Justin Law, backed up by The Clown, who had forced her to run away as he initiates Law-Abiding Silver Gun. As Black Star and Crona argue, Medusa evades Justin's Law-Abiding Silver Gun, as the defected Death Scythe performs Madness Fusion with the Clown. Because Medusa desecrated the Kishin with her fabricated clown, Justin intends to teach Medusa actual madness. Medusa mentally calls out to Eruka and Mizune to retrieve Crona and escape.

After performing the fusion, Justin stands over Medusa with Medusa holding him over her, her head kept within his guillotine as he prepares Executioner: Commence Execution. Justin announces her punishment for claiming power that belongs to the Kishin: death. Medusa smirks, asking on what merits Justin can pass judgment after betraying Death. Music continues to play loudly in Justin's earbuds, as he announces Asura's judgment. Medusa yells at Justin to stop, but it is too late: her blood coats the floor, and Medusa is beheaded.

Then Vector Arrows emerge, heading towards Justin, who slices them away. Medusa, head still intact, crouches and struggles to catch her breath, but at least she is still alive. Justin is surprised Medusa overcome his madness attack yet is interested to know whether she enjoyed the nightmare he gave her. Medusa tells Justin that, after what she experienced under Arachne's madness earlier, she prepared a counter-measure should she encounter a similar madness attack again. Justin realizes that Medusa's protection against madness is the new being that is floating beside Medusa, her newest creation: a portable version of the Black Clown, which she refers to as her Purple Clown. While the Purple Clown is less powerful than the Black Clown, it is a shield against madness attacks. Justin is disgusted that Medusa would perform yet another "blasphemy," when Clowns belong to Asura. Medusa replies, "I'm a witch--blasphemy is our job."

Medusa's Insanity Fusion

Medusa activating Madness Fusion.

Justin slices again at Medusa, who ducks and returns fire with Vector Arrows. But Justin does not move to avoid the arrow attacks: he says that, as madness has allowed for a new evolution in this world, Medusa's arrows are merely an outdated attack from "an obsolete age." Thus, Justin allows the arrows to approach—as his body repels them easily. Medusa, undeterred, responds with her snake attack—which she then combines with Purple Clown through Madness Fusion. Justin is surprised to see the Purple Clown dissolve, the snake's skin bubbling before a Vector Arrow explodes out of it. Three snakes form, more jagged than before and with arrows pointed off their heads, which slither against the ground, upending pavement before knocking into Justin. One snake grabs Justin with its jaws and slams itself, with Justin, into the ground, then the ceiling, and finally the wall.

The wall's destruction pushes up a cloud of dust. Medusa smiles, waiting to see Justin dead. But blood drips from his cut mouth onto the ground, as Justin still stands—with that snake's head trapped within his guillotine, seemingly dead. "That's one," Justin answers with a smile, as Medusa sends two more snakes at him. Justin leaps upward and, from the ceiling, slams his blades into the floor, pulling up segments of the floor upward to crush the last snakes. From the ceiling, Justin initiates Silver Gun, beheading the snakes and preparing to do likewise to Medusa. As Justin lands on the floor, he is confronted by Medusa—and another iteration of Justin. Justin is, predictably, confused, but so is Medusa—because she sees Justin but, rather than a second iteration of him, a second iteration of herself.

Chapter 69 - Tezca uses his Reflect on Justin and affects Medusa

Medusa seeing a vision of Crona from Tezca's Reflect.

Meanwhile, Medusa is trying to figure out why she sees two of herself, but Justin recognizes this subterfuge: the doppleganger is Tezca Tlipoca. Images of Justin's past pass through his mind, as he stands before the Clown then Death. Justin tells Tezca not to "reflect what's in my heart." But Tezca replies, "Life and death are bestowed equally on everyone...I'm a mirror that reflects people...The death you ultimately face is entirely up to you." Medusa looks nervous at Tezca's claim of seeing that death which she will face, as an image of Crona comes to her mind. While Tezca unsuccessfully tries to talk to Justin, Medusa, fed up with this running gag, leaves these "DWMA freaks" behind to go home.

Mad Blood arc[]

From her lair, Medusa instructs Crona to approach the DWMA Eastern European Branch ahead so she may continue to develop Crona's Black Blood and eventually possess the Kishin. Medusa commands Crona to use the Black Blood directly, no other attacks, so that this blood may reach its full weaponized potential.

She observes Crona as they fight against meister, Feodor and Death Scythe, Tsar Pushka. During the fight, she praises Crona for their usage of Bloody Coat after blocking an attack from both opponents, saying that it was a smart move to block rather than, as in the fight against Black Star, depend only on the Black Blood Armor, which shattered too easily. After hearing Medusa explain Tsar’s Anti-Demon abilities, Crona realizes that this test is the obstacle remaining before the Black Blood may be perfected, to stand against Anti-Demon powers themselves.

Crona resolves to overwhelm Tsar in black by allowing the Black Blood to pour from the wrist to form a spire, Bloody Lance. But Feodor kicks Tsar, in Demon Cannon form, in time to allow Tsar to perform Purification, which Medusa defines as Feodor’s physical prowess and Tsar’s Anti-Demon Wavelength to dissolve the Black Blood. Yet, Medusa realizes, Bloody Needles remain, locking Tsar in place in the ground and following upward at the leaping Feodor. Although Feodor crashes to the ground, he recovers to pull Tsar back to perform one more attack, launching himself forward. As Medusa realizes Feodor is attempting to evaporate all of the Black Blood, and Crona with it, in one Full Force attack, Crona mocks the opponent: the Black Blood overwhelms any ray of light. Upon remembering Maka Albarn, Crona adds, “Even the light of that smile” cannot repel the blackness to unleash. In the end, both Feodor and Tzar are both trapped in separate spheres of Black Blood.

Upon returning, Crona informs Medusa that they are home and Medusa compliments them on the battle with Tsar Pushka. Crona remains silent, but thinks that killing through Mad Blood is a simple way to kill. They then go through how it works: when you get swallowed by madness, you swallow it, melt into it, then harden with it. Medusa comments on the swallowing of the entire town in Ukraine, as images appear of the town, now looking like a battleground, with buildings in pieces and people drowning in the Black Blood's madness. Pleased with Crona's progress, Medusa reveals that she has made her child dinner.

Medusa hugs Crona.

Medusa and Crona sit at a dining room table, eating pasta. Medusa says that she put all her skill into making this meal for Crona. Medusa tells Crona to eat as much as they want, and that when they are done, they should take a shower and rest. Crona remains silent and doesn't respond in any way. Medusa apologizes for everything. She knew it was painful, but Crona endured it and became a wonderful child. She continues that, because of Crona, her research is almost over and that the only thing they still have to do is make the Kishin theirs. She thanks Crona, hugs them, and says that she is proud of her child.

Crona tells her that she can't be nice to them, and that they just did everything they were told because Medusa was their mother. They then stab Medusa through the stomach. Crona says that they can't stand her kind words, then screams that they threw away everything because of her.

Medusa final words

Medusa's final moments before her death.

Crona removes their sword out of Medusa's abdomen and stabs her two more times. Crona then says that it is unfair that they had to throw away love, but Medusa could keep it, and that they had even abandoned Maka. Crona then nearly cuts Medusa in half and demands their real mother back. They then stab Medusa and we see the stick figure from the picture book kill someone by stabbing.

Crona then says that Medusa was probably important to them, but they don't care anymore. Medusa then screams from the floor that the black blood is now complete because Crona threw away their last support. She says that she loves Crona, but they deal the finishing blow to her, ultimately killing her once and for all.

Hunt arc[]

Soul Eater Chapter 90 - Crona hallucinates Medusa

Crona hallucinates Medusa's presence.

In the Santa Mario Novella Basilica, Crona chants of the goal to acquire the Kishin, asking for a confirmation from the figure of Medusa that Crona hallucinates nearby.

Trivia[]

  • While the school's primary health doctor, Medusa was a regular at Death Backs Café.[7]
  • Comments from both Medusa and Noah imply there is a rivalry between the two despite never meeting on-panel, with Medusa having expressed not wanting to lose capturing the Kishin to Noah (Greed).[96][97]
  • Medusa's Vector theme appears to be based on Shotaro's "Bones of Medusa"'s ability to fire vectors/snakes like Medusa's vectors, from Atsushi's earlier series B. Ichi.
  • In the "Atsushi Bar" postface of volume 4, it is revealed that Medusa's braid is curling to the right when she is as a witch and curling to the left when she is as a nurse. (Although, the first time she appears as a witch, her braid is mistakenly curling to the left.) Atsushi, the creator of Soul Eater, did this purposely so that if anyone had asked him "Wouldn't people be able to figure out who she is?", he could answer "Her hair is twisted differently so they think she's a different person."
