Plot[]

Soul's Nightmare[]

Soul has a nightmare, which ends with him merged with Maka Albarn, emerging from her abdomen as both partners scream in horror.

Dispensary, Death Weapon Meister Academy[]

Soul wakes up screaming, quickly worrying Maka. Soul quickly calms himself, reassuring Maka that he is fine. Dr. Medusa observes Soul momentarily before encouraging him to rest. As she leaves the students to themselves, Medusa resumes her wicked grin, anticipating that Ragnarok's injury upon Soul will help with her experiment.

At sunset, Maka gets ready to go home but not before asking Soul if there was anything he needed for her. Seeing how depressed Soul looked, she begins to feel bad but Soul tells her that this isn't her fault. Maka says okay and steps out the Dispensary where her father, Spirit Albarn, greets her and asks her to watch the sunset with him.

Library, Death Weapon Meister Academy[]

Elsewhere, Black☆Star is serving detention from Sid Barrett. He has to stack all the books laid out on the floor around the library. As punishment for his failure to acquire Kishin Eggs for his weapon Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, Black☆Star is assigned by Sid to clean up the library, including organizing the books.

As soon as Sid leaves, Black☆Star instead sits atop a stack of books and starts reading a Charisma Justice comic book, cackling loudly. His reading is interrupted by Death the Kid, who asks the ninja to be quiet in the library. While Black☆Star assumes Kid is being punished by Sid as well, the young Shinigami corrects him: he is here to collect a book, one in the stack upon which Black☆Star is sitting.

Black☆Star hands the book, titled Excalibur, to Kid. Curious, Black☆Star asks Kid about the book to which he explains what he heard about it. Kid tells him that its a book about the Legendary Weapon known as the Holy Sword, and whoever could lift the sword from the ground will be deemed a hero and will have everlasting glory and fame. Just talking about it, Kid dreams of wielding the sword because of its "flawless symmetry," while Black☆Star thinks about the fame the sword would bring him. Appearing out of nowhere is Dr. Stein who tells them that he couldn't even handle it, interesting the two students more.

Balcony, Death Weapon Meister Academy[]

Spirit tries to cheer up Maka, but he fails. Maka turns the tables on him, asking how he can claim to love her mother if he cheated on her all the time. Spirit is too stunned to be able to reply.

Eternal Cave, British Isles[]

Meanwhile, Black☆Star and Kid search for the Holy Sword. They reach a mountain and Kid uses his Beelzebub to fly up while Black☆Star climbs. After finally reaching where on top of the mountain they are suppose to go, Black☆Star sees Kid hanging onto a ledge. Kid says he won't get down because he doesn't want his pants to get wet in the water so Black☆Star carries him as they go into The Eternal Cave. They run into a fairy and asks if it knows where the Holy Sword is. The fairy gives them a disturbed look and flies off without saying anything. Black☆Star and Kid eventually finds the Holy Sword. Kid observes and comments on the sword's beauty and symmetry. Black☆Star tries to pull sword first and effortlessly does so much to Kid's dismay. Black☆Star places the sword back, giving Kid a chance and just as he, effortlessly pulls the sword out. The sword transforms into a humanoid figure.

Balcony, Death Weapon Meister Academy[]

When Spirit's continued attempts to cheer up his daughter fail, Maka instead asks her father for more information about Ragnarok, the Demon Sword that injured Soul. Spirit explains that Ragnarok is on his way to becoming a Kishin, which has been forbidden for 800 years. Spirit explains that Death forbids weapons from eating pure human souls, as it can lead a weapon to become something deadly and ominous—a Kishin. While this answer leaves Maka with a lot to think about, Spirit inwardly worries that even a weapon like Soul could risk becoming a Kishin.

Library, Death Weapon Meister Academy[]

Sid returns to see how Black☆Star is doing and sees a very clean library believing it to have been Black☆Star. However, it turned out that Tsubaki did it, upsetting Sid. Dr. Stein tells him that Black☆Star and Kid went to retrieve the Holy Sword. Sid then decides to let it slide as what he was gonna get himself into was punishment enough.

Eternal Cave[]

The sword introduces himself as Excalibur and begins to annoy the Meisters with his constant talking and conceded ways. Excalibur guves them a pile of papers with the 1000 Provisions they must adhere to in order to wield him. After Excalibur transforms into his sword form, they end up placing him back in the ground because he wasn't worth the stress he carried. As they leave, they encounter the same fairy from earlier, who as them if they met Excalibur, and they give her the same face she gave them eariler.

Death Weapon Meister Academy[]

The next day, Black☆Star and Kid with their partners meet. The two Meisters state that their weapons are just fine. Soul walks over, having been released from the Nurse's room. Maka calls Black☆Star and Kid into Class Crescent Moon where there are two banners from Excalibur, one for Kid and Black☆Star each to promise he will await their return. The student grimace in embarrassment.

Manga and Anime Differences[]

  • In the manga, when Soul had a nightmare and he was spilling blood from his wound it was a lot more in contrast to the anime.
  • The papers Excalibur gave to Kid and Black☆Star to agree upon was in a larger stack in the anime than in the manga.

Trivia[]

  • The title, "Legend of the Holy Sword," alludes to Seiken Densetsu (Legend of the Holy Sword), a Mana game series produced by Square Enix, publisher of the manga Soul Eater and its video games, including Monotone Princess.[1]
  • The legend surrounding Excalibur is complicated, especially compared to the original Arthurian legend which states that only the worthy king of Britain may remove the legendary Sword of the Stone. In Soul Eater, while it seems almost anyone can remove the sword and hence receive the fame of it, contending with Excalibur's annoying personality makes that task almost impossible.
  • The Funimation English dub for Episode 9 includes additional performances by Lindsay Seidel, Megan Miller, Tricia Ponsford, and Kara Edwards. Seidel and Edwards would go on to play Meme Tatane and Eternal Feather in Soul Eater NOT!
