Demonstrating a Jot[]

Soul Eater NOT Demonstrating a Jot - Kim tanuki form

Kim transforms into a tanuki

At the DWMA library, Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupre, upset that Kim Diehl still refuses to be her meister, reads more about witches to learn how to convince her friend to be her partner. Learning that witches can transform into animals, Jacqueline approaches Kim at the girls’ dormitory and asks her to demonstrate which animal is her familiar. After confirming that she and Jacqueline are alone, Kim transforms into a tanuki.

A Jot of Revenge[]

Continuing immediately from “Demonstrating a Jot,” Jackie shouts how adorable Kim is, but the tanuki panics that such loud talking will attract attention. Sure enough, Misery complains that no animals are allowed in the dormitory. Kim is all the more scared when Jacqueline obediently promises to “toss out” the animal.

As Tsugumi Harudori and her meisters watch Jacqueline deposit Kim in a box outside the dormitory for adoption, Meme Tatane worries that tanukis are not very nice, Anya Hepburn worries no one will adopt the animal, but Tsugumi is impressed how much the animal resembles Kim—which, despite being Kim herself, still upsets the witch. Jackie invites the trio to join her for the walk to take the animal away from the dormitory to let someone else adopt the tanuki, which confuses Kim: how is she supposed to turn back into a human without people noticing if Jackie is going to keep her out here in public?

A Jot Better[]

Continuing immediately from “A Jot of Revenge,” Jackie and the trio leave the tanuki in an open space, and up until sunset, numerous bystanders pet and harass Kim, preventing her from reverting back to a human in public—and really desiring to charge people if they insist on petting her.

That night, Jacqueline is in her dorm room, reading. When Kim enters, now human again, her hair a mess from all the petting, Jackie only says, “Took you long enough.” Kim breaks down, crying, admitting that Jackie is “the only one for me.” Jacqueline is lovestruck again, noticing Kim now has a snaggletooth that makes her look “so cute.”

Jacqueline concludes this chapter, writing that “the proper way to raise a Kim” may involve “abandonment [to] make[] the heart grow fonder.”

Manga and Anime Differences[]

  • In the anime, Jacqueline lived with an unnamed female roommate. In “A Jot Better,” the bunk bed in her room, and Kim entering that room without being invited in, may suggest that, at by this point in the manga, the two have become roommates. The final episode of the anime also presented Kim and Jackie exiting from the same room, but the timeline as to when the two moved in together, assuming that they have, is not yet clear.

Trivia[]

  • Tsugumi again notices Kim's resemblance to a tanuki.
