Akane☆Hoshi (星☆茜, Hoshi☆Akane, lit. Red☆Star ) is a Great Sword Meister (グレートソード職人, Daiken Shokunin) and a student of DWMA and partner to Clay Sizemore who was transferred into the NOT Class[5] In actuality, he is one of the the top performing E.A.T students in the academy[6] who is in the DWMA-CIA.[5]

Background

Having been taught his family's assassination techniques and deadly martial arts, Akane joined DWMA to utilize his skills to help other people out.[2]

Personality

Akane's manner of dress evidently demonstrates his reserved and courteous disposition. Intelligent and sociable when circumstances require, he is usually seen smiling when in public, though not quite in the same quantity and respect as his partner. Akane is generally respectful to those he meets. As with his attire, he can be very formal in his manner of speaking and the way he conducts himself, to the extent that during simple acts such as sitting, he retains an upright position and rarely places his hands on a table, unless they are previously folded. Even when conversing with someone as familiar as Tsugumi Harudori, he calls her by her surname instead of her given name. He is additionally described as a perfectionist by Clay Sizemore.

Akane places considerable confidence in his abilities despite being a part of the NOT curriculum, though, this is because of him previously being within the EAT ("Especially Advantaged Talent") class. He has even failed to attend required fundamental lessons on some occasions, citing that he has no need for such basics as the only reason for his absence.[7] He also seems to have no trouble bargaining information for money.

Akane is able to tolerate uncomfortable circumstances, claiming he clears his mind of distractions, including his warm blazer even in warm temperatures.[8]

Clay claims Akane is afraid of Halloween and monsters. While this may seem to be a mistake on Clay's part, as his pranks on Akane do not provoke a frightened reaction, Clay may be accurate, as Tsugumi, around whom Akane lets his guard down, managed to put Akane into a catatonic state with her own monster mask.[9]

Relationships

Main article: Akane☆Hoshi/Relationships

Appearance

Akane is relatively tall and slender in stature, when compared to most of the other students who share a similar age, whose facial features are largely obscured by his medium-length, dark, shaggy hair and stylishly framed glasses. Strangely, as even with these glasses removed, his right eye remains normal, while the left is not. His fringe of hair appears to conceal this star shaped pupil, which would ultimately show his relation to the Hoshi Family. His typical attire consists of a simple black suit accompanied by a white shirt and solid black tie, which is further adorned by the presence of an ornate Shinigami tie clip. This clothing is completed by a simple pair of black leather shoes and a light-colored belt.[10]

In Soul Eater, Akane's appearance has changed drastically, forfeiting the entirety of the formality that once characterized him during his youth. While still retaining its original color and length, his dark hair has since been arranged into a prominent array of spikes, both directed towards and obscuring the left-half of his face, whilst still allowing his glasses to be seen. It seems that his regular uniform, while undertaking his routine duties, is now comprised from a pair of dark trousers and white t-shirt, worn under a short-sleeved jacket. This coat is emblazoned by two Shinigami emblems, the teeth of which run down the entire length of its front, with a further pair of stars depicted upon either shoulder. He typically wears this jacket open with its collar upturned, while multiple black bands encircle both of his lower forearms.[11]

Special Abilities

Utility Meister (ユーティリティ職人, Yūtiriti Shokunin): Although primarily a skilled Great Swordsman, it seems that Akane also holds some skill in other weaponry.

Chapter 92 - Akane holds off White Rabbit

Akane battles against White Rabbit with the Demon Great Sword.

  • Great Sword Meister (グレートソード職人, Daiken Shokunin): Akane is exceptionally skilled with a great sword, in which he wields Clay Sizemore's weapon form, the Demon Great Sword. He's shown to have exceptional skill while wielding the weapon. His skill has been shown able to fight evenly with the witch, Shaula Gorgon, with his weapon partner for a short bout before she felt overwhelmed.[12] He was also able to skillfully hold his own with the clown, White Rabbit despite being in a tight space and a disadvantage. The Clown even complimented his skill in it's usage.[13]
  • Halberd Meister: Although the level of prowess he possesses is unknown, Akane has once asked NOT Class student Tsugumi Harudori to act as his weapon partner,[14] although he admitted he was joking on his proposal.[15] Despite this, he has (jokingly) presented himself as an alternative partner for Tsugumi,[16] has early on shown interest in her being a Halberd Weapon,[17] and is familiar in the usage of a halberd.[18]

Soul Wavelength (魂の波長, Tamashī no hachō): Akane in particular has a powerful enough of a Soul Wavelength to use offensively.[19]

Shaula Blocks Akane's Soul Menace

Soul Menace.

  • Soul Menace (魂威, Kon'i; FUNimation "Soul Force"): Akane is capable of offensively utilizing his Soul Wavlength to perform Soul Menace, a electrical-like technique capable of cracking concrete as well as produce a strong force.[20] When used against Shaula Gorgon, it proved sufficent enough to send her flying back a distance (however, with no visible damage).[21]

Soul Perception (魂感知能力, Tamashī Kanchi Nōryoku): Akane has shown the ability to sense souls with Soul Perception, sensing souls disappearing[22] and the wavelength of the Kishin, Asura.[23] His level of precision has enabled him to sense the presence of the Kishin Asura despite using the Madness of Fear to render himself invisible to other's perceptions and measure Asura's proximity in meters.[24]

Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Taught by his family at his family's dojo,[25] Akane possess exceptional skill in martial arts and is one of the few Meisters who can handle himself independent of a Demon Weapon. His skill allows him to easily dispatch a Traitor in one hit[26] and in the anime easily subdue Anya Hepburn as she tried attacking him[27] as well as multiple Traitors on his own.[28]

  • Martial Arts: As a member of the Hoshi Family, Akane has received training and information on other martial arts.[25]
  • Judo (柔道, jūdō): Akane has knowledge in how judo originally started and was implied to have learn the old tradition of judo in which he was taught the style that was lethal and was another method to kill.[25]
  • Old Ways (古武術, Ko Bujutsu; FUNimation "Ancient Martial Arts"): Akane's signature martial art seems to be what he has learned from his family. In the anime, this martial art in which he performs is shown to allow him to not only dodge attacks with the minimum of movements[27] but also know the weak points of the body.[28]

Assassination Skills: Akane mentioned that he also possess assassination skills taught to him by his family and works at the DWMA to make use of the skills he was taught.[29]

Athleticism: Akane himself possess great level of athleticism, being the top of the NOT Class during his enrollment within the curriculum and Sid himself stated that he even exceeded most of the EAT Class in terms of speed during the Athletics Test.[6]

Enhanced Speed: Akane is also an incredibly fast individual. He possessed enough speed to appear to take Meme's kick for Anya in a second despite being at a distance from her,[30] was noted by White Rabbit to be a quick individual when he appeared from behind the Clown to in front of him to protect the Eternal Spring Demon Tool,[31] and in the anime easily caught up to Anya simply by jumping and was even ahead of her.[27] His speed was recorded as

Enhanced Durability: Akane is a durable individual, being durable enough to take two direct hits from the Clown, White Rabbit. While the first hit pushed him into a wall and emerged with no visible injury, the second hit was able to create a minor injury, though the situation called for him to be voluntarily struck.[31] He also withstood a kick from a mind controlled Meme Tatane, who possess enough strength to send both him, and Anya into a bookcase and destroy it.[30] Akane claims some of this ability owes to being able to clear his mind of distractions.[8]

History

Episode 4 (NOT) - Akane durng training

Akane during his time training at his family dojo.

Akane was born in a dojo operated by his family, the same dojo that gave birth to the Star Clan, a infamous clan filled with assassins who would do any sort of killing for money. Rigorously trained in his family's exclusive martial way as well as learning assassination skills, Akane would then eventually attend DWMA, as he felt it would have been a waste to not utilize the assassination skills taught to him.[32]

Synopsis

Soul Eater NOT!

Introduction Arc

Episode 1 (NOT!) - Hao and Raid defeated with Akane, Clay, and Sid spectating

Sid asks for either of them to contact the school nurse.

Attending a brief entrance ceremony upon his arrival at DWMA, Akane seats himself in one of the corners of the spacious room, accompanied by the presence of a single other NOT ("Normally Overcome Target") student. Upon his dismissal after Sid Barrett's introduction, Akane chances upon a small skirmish occurring in the corridor, where he prevents his fellow partner from intervening in favor of simply observing the confrontation instead. He then proceeds to attentively watch the fight in its entirety, even going as far as to push those blocking his view out of the way at one point when he found that Tsugumi Harudori was a halberd. When the confrontation ends quickly, he and his partner is notified to get the school nurse.[33]

Choosing to seek employment at a café within Death City, Akane and Clay are greeted with the familiar faces of Tsugumi Harudori, Meme Tatane and Anya Hepburn, where the pair then exchange introductions with their fellow students. Questioned about their reasons for attending a part-time job, Akane asserts that Clay spent their entire allowance on playing games, something which Clay attempts to refute but is prevented from doing so due to a quick glance from his meister. After changing into their respective waiter uniforms, the motivated pair begin to attend to their duties, while remaining worried about both Tsugumi's and Meme's attempts. During a short coffee break, Akane remarks about the deliciousness of his drink causing Clay to ponder the café's need to hire part-timers in spite of this, however, this thought is interrupted by the arrival of Ox Ford.[34]

Seeing out the rest of the uneventful week, both Akane and Clay receive their pay and thanks from the café's Master at the jobs conclusion.[35]

Akane and Traitor

Akane confronts one of the Traitors

Overhearing Sid's conversation about several occurrences of incidents involving Traitors over the past month, Clay proposes that he and Akane demonstrate their strength in order to drive away these unwanted individuals, which Akane agrees to as they are both free until the afternoon. Patrolling the streets of the city, the pair quickly identifies their target after the abnormal person asks the bemusing question of "did you sleep well last night?" Intending to use intimidation alone to scare off the opposition, Akane deftly slashes Clay's weapon form downwards but when the target replies by driving his head onto the tip of the blade, Akane is forced to deliver an incapacitating blow while remarking: "What's wrong with this guy?".[36]

Arriving late to their scheduled class, Akane applauds Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans's performance, before blaming his tardiness on Clay goofing around at the arcade again. Akane then proceeds to privately recount today’s events to Sid, noting that he took the precaution of placing the strange individual in confinement, due to the circumstances surrounding his abnormal behavior being unknown.[37]

Akane Soul Menace

Akane intercepts a Traitor using Soul Menace

Appearing just in time to prevent the infliction of further injury upon his fellow NOT students, Akane makes a dramatic entrance from above in order to intercept the charge of another Traitor, by driving his wavelength reinforced fist directly into the solid ground below. Identifying that both himself and the nearby girls are not combat operatives of the DWMA and thus, not an appropriate way to determine his strength, Akane kindly asks the assailant to temporarily retreat. Fortunately, this course of action succeeds and once the individual has left, both Akane and Clay volunteer to accompany the girls back to their dormitory.[38]

How To! Arc

Encountering a solitary Tsugumi as she wanders the corridors between lessons, Akane enquires about the unusual absence of her companions Anya and Meme, resulting in him being told that they are currently in a class exclusively for meisters in response. Questioned as to why he also isn't attending, Akane asserts that they are just teaching the basics, so his presence isn't really required. Hearing this, Tsugumi timidly proposes that they speak with one another, but only if he has the time.[7]

Akane's eye

Akane's true eyes and heritage are revealed

Proceeding to a nearby restaurant, the two begin to converse, with Akane indicating that Tsugumi's principal question revolves around the reasons behind a meister's desire to enrol in the DWMA in spite of the considerable risk they may face. Although confessing that he isn't aware of everyone’s individual motives, it is his belief that in general, most come in search of a career, as it isn't uncommon for graduates to be employed in the political realms of various countries, with some jobs even listing it as a compulsory requirement (i.e. Japan's prime minister). Noting that many people place their trust in the DWMA and its affiliates, Akane reminds Tsugumi that as students even the expenditure of their allowance is monitored and assessed in regards to their overall character, before continuing that some may attend just to gain authority over others, while some may simply seek to become heroes to protect the world. Asked if his own reason for enrolment is the same as the latter, Akane explains that his instead relates to his family, the reason he was born and raised within a dojo. However, unlike most schools of practice that have descended into treating martial arts like sports, his instead taught traditional techniques honed to kill people. Enquiring about Tsugumi's knowledge of the Star Clan, he tells the unaware girl that they were a group of assassins who would go to any length to acquire wealth, and stating that this clan is a branch of the dojo he calls home. Removing his glasses while stating the reason behind them is to conceal his unpleasant eyes, Akane's pupils suddenly assume the shape of a star, indicating his connection to the clan that was mostly eradicated by the DWMA for not abiding by the law. Fearing the waste caused by the sealing away of these techniques, he had them relentlessly beaten into him in the hopes to use this power for the sake of others. A purpose that eventually makes it necessary for him to aim to move into the EAT ("Especially Advantaged Talent") class.

Tsugumi sincerely tells Akane that she admires and looks up to his mentality as she is yet unaware of her own goal, an attitude which he apparently finds cute. Asked if she too aims to enter the EAT curriculum, a flustered Tsugumi attests that it's impossible for someone as inexperienced as herself to do so but Akane shockingly reveals that he will protect her from anything and everything that she encounters. However, in order to do that, Tsugumi needs to be close to him and so offering her his hand, he proposes the question "will you become mine?".[39]

Akane and Clay Athletics

Akane in his athletics attire, in light of NOT's physical strength assessment

Reminiscing about yesterday's perplexing conversation, Tsugumi recounts how Akane quickly declared his previous proposal as nothing but a mere joke, before kindly asserting that there was no need for her to be impatient when it comes to the decision upon what she desires to accomplish, especially considering that it had been only two weeks since she joined the DWMA. Stating that if after a year she was still unsure about her purpose, she should come and find him, Akane then departed.[40] Next observed at the curriculum's physical strength assessment that day, an exhausted Akane is pronounced as being superior to the rest of the NOT class after running 100 meters in just 6.32 seconds, a time that easily qualifies him for the EAT class. Advised to not overdo it by Clay, he is watched from afar by Tsugumi, who suspects that he has been continually looking towards Anya. Still under the impression that his gaze has been fixed on her companion, Akane approaches Tsugumi at the lesson's conclusion, commending her valiant efforts in spite of her disheartening results. Imploring her to continue to work hard, Akane is pleased by her confident reply.[41]

Hunt Arc

Chapter 90 - Akane and Clay CIA

Akane and Clay, now members of the DWMA Central Intelligence Agency

After a disembodied Tezca Tlipoca identified the moon as a potential place of residence for the Kishin, Asura, and with the confirmation of this suspicion due to Maka Albarn's Soul Perception ability, Shinigami orders that preparations be undertaken in anticipation for the final confrontation. With Franken Stein assuming command over the entire operation, Sid goes and instructs both Akane and Clay to provide assistance.[11] When meeting Noah and Gopher, they completely ignored them. They told them they are free to go in as long as both follow them. As Akane entered, he felt the "madness" leaking out and had a bad feeling. When they met up with Sid, he was surprised to see Noah and Gopher with them. Akane told Sid he was "using" them, as Noah said that "they" were using them. As Sid reached the end of the cave, they found a pitch black pit. Sid dropped a flare which woke up Asura. However, it was only a hallucination; hence proving that Asura is there.

Trivia

  • Due to his athletic prowess and handsome appearance, Akane☆Hoshi is among some of the most popular students within the academy and particularly in the NOT Class during his time in the curriculum.[42]
